About Gubbio Christmas Tree

Every December, the slope of Mount Ingino lights up like an immense Christmas tree: hundreds of colored lights draw a silhouette over 750 meters high that rises from the walls of Gubbio to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, where a star over a thousand square meters shines. Created in 1981 and listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest Christmas tree, it is entirely built and maintained by Eugubinian volunteers. The official lighting, on December 7th, is one of the most anticipated moments of Christmas in Umbria.

A tree as tall as a mountain

The World's Largest Christmas Tree is not a real tree, but an extraordinary illumination that transforms the entire slope of Mount Ingino, above Gubbio, into the silhouette of a Christmas tree. The structure is over 750 meters high with a base of about 450 meters, composed of hundreds of colored light points connected by thousands of meters of electric cables. At the top, near the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, a large star exceeding a thousand square meters shines.

In the Guinness Book of Records since 1981

The initiative began in 1981 and since 1991 it has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest Christmas tree. It is a collective work: the volunteers of the Committee build, maintain, and light it every year, symbolizing the pride and identity of the Eugubinian community.

A symbol for Umbria

Visible from miles away, the tree has become one of the symbols of Christmas in Umbria and throughout Italy. It is part of the broader 'Gubbio is Christmas' program, which fills the city with markets, lights, and attractions throughout the holiday season, in the province of Perugia.

Gubbio Christmas Tree — edition 2026

The 45th lighting of the World's Largest Christmas Tree is scheduled for December 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM, on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, on Mount Ingino in Gubbio. The illumination remains lit every evening until January 11, 2027, the Sunday after Epiphany.

The 2026 edition of the World's Largest Christmas Tree confirms the tradition started in 1981. The official lighting is scheduled for December 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM, on the eve of the Immaculate Conception holiday, and the illumination remains visible every evening, from late afternoon until late at night, until January 11, 2027. Hundreds of colored lights draw a silhouette over 750 meters high on the slope of Mount Ingino, culminating in the large star at the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo. The work, entirely created by Eugubinian volunteers, is accompanied by the 'Adopt a light' campaign and the 'Gubbio is Christmas' program.
