The giant of lights on Mount Ingino, Guinness certified
The World's Largest Christmas Tree is not a real tree, but an extraordinary illumination that transforms the entire slope of Mount Ingino, above Gubbio, into the silhouette of a Christmas tree. The structure is over 750 meters high with a base of about 450 meters, composed of hundreds of colored light points connected by thousands of meters of electric cables. At the top, near the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, a large star exceeding a thousand square meters shines.
The initiative began in 1981 and since 1991 it has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest Christmas tree. It is a collective work: the volunteers of the Committee build, maintain, and light it every year, symbolizing the pride and identity of the Eugubinian community.
Visible from miles away, the tree has become one of the symbols of Christmas in Umbria and throughout Italy. It is part of the broader 'Gubbio is Christmas' program, which fills the city with markets, lights, and attractions throughout the holiday season, in the province of Perugia.
The 2026 edition of the World's Largest Christmas Tree confirms the tradition started in 1981. The official lighting is scheduled for December 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM, on the eve of the Immaculate Conception holiday, and the illumination remains visible every evening, from late afternoon until late at night, until January 11, 2027. Hundreds of colored lights draw a silhouette over 750 meters high on the slope of Mount Ingino, culminating in the large star at the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo. The work, entirely created by Eugubinian volunteers, is accompanied by the 'Adopt a light' campaign and the 'Gubbio is Christmas' program.
The central event is the lighting ceremony on December 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM, an anticipated moment of light, music, and community spirit, coinciding with the eve of the Immaculate Conception. After the lighting, the tree remains illuminated every evening, from late afternoon to late at night, for the entire Christmas period until January 11, 2027.
The initiatives of the city's 'Gubbio is Christmas' program, with markets, attractions, and shows, revolve around the lighting. The detailed calendar and side events are published on the official website alberodigubbio.com.
Gubbio can be reached by car from the E45 or by bus from Perugia and Fossato di Vico. The tree is visible from the entire valley; you can take the cable car from Porta Romana to reach Mount Ingino.
The tree is lit every evening, from late afternoon until late at night, throughout the Christmas season. You can support the initiative with the 'Adopt a light' campaign.
