The Castelnuovo Carnival is the annual masquerade event that, in the heart of winter, transforms the historic center of Castelnuovo di Porto into a vibrant explosion of color, confetti, and cheer. Overlooking the Tiber Valley north of Rome, the village is part of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital in the Lazio region, and for one full Sunday, it sets aside daily life to embrace the festive atmosphere of the Carnival.
The heart of the event is the grand masquerade parade that winds through the village streets. Children, teenagers, and adults in costume follow the allegorical floats and masked groups that bring the procession to life with music, dancing, and showers of confetti. Participants traditionally gather in Piazza Gavioli, the meeting point from which the parade sets off toward the historic center.
Alongside the parade, the festival offers a space dedicated to street food, featuring traditional carnival sweets and local culinary specialties, as well as musical performances and numerous activities designed for families. Entertainment for the little ones, including costumes, games, and cartoon characters, makes the Castelnuovo Carnival an event particularly beloved by children.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Castelnuovo di Porto in collaboration with the local municipality and represents one of the most cherished appointments in the town's winter calendar. Participation is free and open to all, embodying the spirit of sharing and conviviality that characterizes village festivals in Lazio.
Dominated by the dramatic Rocca Colonna, Castelnuovo di Porto is a medieval village rich in history, located a short distance from Rome along the Via Flaminia. Attending the Castelnuovo Carnival is also the perfect opportunity to explore the alleys of the historic center, the fortress, and the hospitality of a community that celebrates its folk traditions with enthusiasm.
The 2026 Castelnuovo Carnival has been announced for Sunday, February 8, in Castelnuovo di Porto, in the province of Rome. As per tradition, the day will revolve around the grand masquerade parade in the historic center, with allegorical floats, masked groups, music, and entertainment for families.
