About Rock Nights

For over twenty years, on one of the hottest nights of the Abruzzo summer, Piazza Martiri della Resistenza in Castel di Ieri transforms into an open-air stage dedicated to live rock. Castel di Ieri Rock Nights is a free event established in 2002 and organized by the association of the same name, bringing together tribute bands and original groups in a small village in the province of L'Aquila, at the foot of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. Concerts, rock aperitifs, and food stands serving arrosticini and draft beer keep the village buzzing until late at night.

The Festival

Castel di Ieri Rock Nights is one of the longest-running and most distinctive rock festivals in the Abruzzo hinterland. Born in 2002 from the initiative of a group of live music enthusiasts, the event has spanned over twenty editions, bringing great rock music every summer to a small village in the Subequana Valley, in the municipality of Castel di Ieri, in the province of L'Aquila. Admission has always been free, in keeping with the community spirit of the organizing association, which promotes rock music as an opportunity for cultural growth and local tourism development.

Location

The heart of the event is Piazza Martiri della Resistenza, which is set up for the occasion with a stage, sound system, and lighting. Castel di Ieri sits at the foot of the Sirente massif, within the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, in a cool and evocative mountain setting that makes summer evenings particularly pleasant. The small Abruzzo town, located not far from Sulmona and the Peligna Valley, is also known for its pre-Roman Italic temple, one of the most significant archaeological sites in inland Abruzzo.

The Music

The program alternates between tribute bands dedicated to the great names of international rock and original groups from the Abruzzo and national scene. Over the years, the stage has hosted tribute projects for Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Alice in Chains, R.E.M., and Depeche Mode, alongside power metal, hard rock, and rock singer-songwriter acts. Evenings often begin in the late afternoon with a rock aperitif and live music, continuing with the main concerts after dinner.

Atmosphere and Gastronomy

Beyond the music, the festival is a gathering point for the entire Subequana community. During the evenings, a food stand operates, offering Abruzzo specialties such as the essential arrosticini (sheep skewers) cooked over charcoal and draft beer, in an informal and convivial atmosphere that brings together rock fans, families, and passing tourists. The festival is sponsored by the Municipality of Castel di Ieri and collaborates with local entities to promote tourism in the area.

A Summer Appointment in Inland Abruzzo

Traditionally held in August, Castel di Ieri Rock Nights represents a landmark for rock lovers in Abruzzo and an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the region, far from the most beaten tourist paths. The combination of quality music, free admission, and a mountain setting makes it an event capable of attracting audiences from all over the province of L'Aquila and neighboring provinces.
