The Castagnata a Morimondo (Province of Milan) is the traditional autumn festival organised by the local Pro Loco (local tourism association). For one day, the streets of the village, dominated by the splendid Cistercian Abbey and listed among Italy's most beautiful villages, are filled with the aroma of roasted chestnuts and the warm, welcoming atmosphere of late October village festivals.
The flavours of the chestnut
The absolute star is the chestnut, presented in all its forms: freshly roasted chestnuts, steaming mulled wine, and desserts made with chestnut flour. Stalls and stands liven up the historic centre, in a festival that celebrates the genuine flavours of autumn and the gastronomic culture of the Ticino region.
A community festival
The Castagnata is one of those simple, authentic festivals that tell of the bond between a community and its traditions. In the evocative setting of Morimondo, a "slow city" and a village of great charm, the event attracts locals and visitors for a day of outdoor conviviality, amidst the crackling of chestnuts on the fire and the colours of the Lombard autumn.
