Two days of meetings, debates, and music on degrowth and alternative economic models in Poppi
In the heart of the Casentino, one of Tuscany's greenest valleys, the town of Poppi (Arezzo province) hosts Casentino Beyond Growth, two days of meetings, debates, and music dedicated to degrowth and alternative economic models. The initiative stems from the desire of local organizations to propose an open dialogue on new development models, based on caring for people, the environment, and social relationships rather than unlimited growth.
The main program takes place in the evocative setting of the Castello dei Conti Guidi in Poppi, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Tuscany, overlooking the Casentino plain. Here, amidst historic halls and the courtyard, expert talks, a theatrical performance, a roundtable, and musical interludes take place. The choice of the castle is no coincidence: combining a landmark of local historical heritage with a reflection on the future is a core part of the event's message.
The common thread is the search for concrete alternatives to the model of continuous economic growth. The roundtable focuses on experiences and best practices already active in the area in the fields of agriculture, community, economy, and energy. This is not an abstract debate, but a discussion rooted in the reality of the Casentino, starting from what already works to imagine new paths.
The event is promoted by a network of local stakeholders: the Biodistretto Casentino, the Ecomuseo del Casentino, the GAS (Solidarity Purchasing Group) and Farmers' Market, along with other active groups in the valley. The event is supported by the Union of Mountain Municipalities of the Casentino and the Municipality of Poppi. It is this grassroots involvement that gives the two-day event an authentically participatory character, far removed from the logic of large commercial events.
After the first day at the castle, Sunday's discussions move to Spazio CU.RA, located in the former hospital of Poppi, with collective workshops where citizens, associations, and professionals delve into the topics together. A participatory method that turns listening into proposals, putting the future of the Casentino at the center.
For those visiting the province of Arezzo and the Casentino, Casentino Beyond Growth is an opportunity to discover a less touristy and more vibrant side of the valley: that of a community that debates, reflects, and makes music together. Between debates, shows, aperitifs, and concerts in the castle courtyard, the event combines cultural reflection with the pleasure of being together in one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany.
The 2026 edition of Casentino Beyond Growth takes place on June 20-21, 2026, between the Castello dei Conti Guidi in Poppi and Spazio CU.RA. The two-day event features expert talks, a theatrical performance, a roundtable on agriculture, community, economy, and energy, musical moments, and participatory workshops. The initiative is complemented by several lead-up events, including themed film screenings dedicated to degrowth and environmental care.
The detailed program with times, guests, and musical acts is updated on the channels of the Biodistretto Casentino and the Ecomuseo del Casentino.
