Three days of flavor, folklore, and culture in the heart of the Agro Atellano
The Casatiello Festival is the signature event of Sant'Arpino, a town in the province of Caserta nestled in the heart of the Agro Atellano, in Campania. Conceived and promoted by the Pro Loco Sant'Arpino, the festival has grown into a defining brand for the region, attracting thousands of visitors from across the Campanian provinces every year. The event's roots lie in the ancient Festa di Santu Calione, which was rediscovered and revitalized by the Pro Loco through the promotion of authentic casatiello and traditional Campanian peasant cuisine.
The casatiello is the quintessential Neapolitan rustic bread: a leavened dough enriched with eggs, cheese, cured meats, lard, and black pepper, slow-baked until compact and fragrant. It is more than just a dish; it is the story of a rural civilization that found a collective reason to celebrate around springtime and Easter. In Sant'Arpino, the casatiello is prepared according to ancient popular tradition, using simple ingredients and intense flavors, and is served at the piazza stalls alongside other typical products from the Caserta and Atellano areas.
The gastronomic heart of the festival is entrusted to historic local establishments that manage the stalls throughout the event:
The festival is about more than just food: every evening, the piazza hosts live concerts dedicated to Campanian folk music and Neapolitan singer-songwriter traditions. There are also historical re-enactments curated by the Antiqua Tempora association, which presents an 18th-century pageant linked to the figure of the Duke of Sant'Arpino, as well as folk dances that involve the audience until late at night. This is what sets this festival apart from a simple food fair: taste is intertwined with the community's historical memory.
For several editions, the Pro Loco has complemented the gastronomic program with a dedicated cultural itinerary. The public can participate in free guided tours of historic sites in the old town, including the Palazzo Ducale and the Church of Sant'Elpidio, and visit art collectives set up in municipal spaces. This formula has transformed the festival into an opportunity to discover the Atellano heritage, which is often little-known even to locals.
The evenings take place outdoors in a pedestrianized piazza equipped with tables and tasting areas. Admission is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls. The atmosphere is that of a traditional Southern Italian village festival—families, groups of friends, children, and visitors arriving from Naples, Caserta, and the entire area north of the regional capital. Those who arrive early find seating easily; on weekend evenings, the piazza fills up quickly after 8:00 PM.
The Casatiello Festival is one of the most authentic ways to understand the Agro Atellano: a densely populated territory historically linked to the ancient Oscan city of Atella, which uses these events to assert its cultural and gastronomic identity. For international visitors, it offers a direct immersion into popular Campanian cuisine, far from the tourist circuits of the Gulf of Naples.
From June 12 to 14, 2026, Sant'Arpino hosted the thirty-second Casatiello Festival, organized by the Pro Loco Sant'Arpino, presided over by Aldo Pezzella, with the support of the Municipality led by Mayor Ernesto Di Mattia. The event took place in Piazza Ten. Giuseppe Macrì, with food stalls open every evening from 6:00 PM to 12:00 AM and completely free admission.
The absolute star was the casatiello, the rustic bread made with eggs, cheese, and cured meats prepared according to the ancient Atellano peasant recipe, offered by Antichi Sapori Gifuni and Casatiè — Cucine Atellane of the Petrone family. Alongside the casatiello stalls, there was space for other typical products from the province of Caserta and local crafts.
The cultural program complemented the gastronomy with guided tours of the Palazzo Ducale and the Church of Sant'Elpidio, the collective exhibition «Persistenza — Art through the generations», the 18th-century costume parade by the Antiqua Tempora association, and folk dances by Sud — Folk — Dance. Each evening concluded with a live concert in the piazza.
Program announced by the organizers and local press; individual performance times were subject to change.
