A masked parade featuring Gipin and Catlinin in the heart of Monferrato
In the heart of Monferrato, in the province of Alessandria, the Casale Monferrato Carnival is one of the most cherished events of the winter season. For an entire day, the city's historic center transforms into an open-air stage: masks, costumes, music, and colors flood the squares and streets as thousands of spectators gather to watch the grand allegorical parade. This festival has become an unmissable tradition, where local heritage and popular culture intertwine in a vibrant homage to the territory's identity.
The festivities are traditionally led by Gipin and Catlinin, the two historic masks of the Casale Carnival. Each year, they are portrayed by different local residents chosen for their connection to the city and the festival; donning the costumes of Gipin and Catlinin is considered a true honor and a way to represent the community before the entire Monferrato region. The two masks head the procession, accompanied by musical bands and majorette groups, to kick off the parade.
A unique feature of the Casale Carnival is the cardboard floats, built by participants using only cardboard and paper adhesive tape. Many of these floats are inspired by the vessels of the historic "Galleggia non galleggia" initiative, a cardboard boat race on the Po River created by the Amici del Po, which stands as a symbol of Casale's creativity and playful spirit.
The parade winds through the historic center, starting from Piazza Castello in front of the Teatro Municipale and continuing through the city streets to Piazza Mazzini, where the masks are presented to the jury for the final awards ceremony. Competition categories include individuals, couples, groups, best cardboard float, school classes, as well as categories dedicated to local parishes and the municipalities of Monferrato.
Organized by the Municipality of Casale Monferrato in collaboration with local merchant, artisan, and agricultural associations, the Carnival involves schools, parishes, and groups from neighboring towns. Admission and registration are free, and the day concludes with the awarding of the most beautiful costumes and floats, decided by a jury that also includes young guest judges. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience the authentic spirit of a local festival within the elegant setting of one of Piedmont's art cities.
The 2026 edition of the Casale Monferrato Carnival, originally scheduled for February 14 and postponed due to the risk of bad weather, was held on Saturday, February 21, 2026. The parade brought the city's historic center to life with masks, cardboard floats, and plenty of joy.
The procession was led by traditional masks Gipin and Catlinin, portrayed by Andrea Corino and Sara Montiglio, and accompanied by the Occimiano Philharmonic Band and the "Le Azzurre di Occimiano" majorettes. The day concluded with the awarding of the best costumes and floats in Piazza Mazzini.
Competition categories: individuals, couples, groups, best "Cardboard float", "School class", and new categories for parishes and Monferrato municipalities.
Casale Monferrato can be reached by car via the A26 motorway (Casale Sud or Casale Nord exits) and by train via the Casale Monferrato station, which is connected to Turin, Vercelli, Alessandria, and Mortara. The parade takes place in the historic center, just a few minutes' walk from the station.
Participants gather in Piazza Castello, with the procession starting in the early afternoon. Watching the parade is completely free, as is registration for those wishing to participate with a costume or a cardboard float.
Arrive early to secure a spot along the route and take the opportunity to visit the historic center of Casale Monferrato, including the Duomo di Sant'Evasio and the Jewish quarter. For information and registration, contact the Municipality's Events Office.
