About Casale Carnival

The Casale Monferrato Carnival is a grand popular festival that brightens the historic center of this Alessandria city every winter with its famous allegorical parade. The procession is led by traditional masks Gipin and Catlinin, accompanied by marching bands, majorettes, and the iconic cardboard floats crafted by participants. It is a day of joy, costumes, music, and awards that blends tradition and folk culture, serving as a true tribute to the identity of the Monferrato region.

The Casale Monferrato Carnival

In the heart of Monferrato, in the province of Alessandria, the Casale Monferrato Carnival is one of the most cherished events of the winter season. For an entire day, the city's historic center transforms into an open-air stage: masks, costumes, music, and colors flood the squares and streets as thousands of spectators gather to watch the grand allegorical parade. This festival has become an unmissable tradition, where local heritage and popular culture intertwine in a vibrant homage to the territory's identity.

Gipin and Catlinin, the city's masks

The festivities are traditionally led by Gipin and Catlinin, the two historic masks of the Casale Carnival. Each year, they are portrayed by different local residents chosen for their connection to the city and the festival; donning the costumes of Gipin and Catlinin is considered a true honor and a way to represent the community before the entire Monferrato region. The two masks head the procession, accompanied by musical bands and majorette groups, to kick off the parade.

Cardboard floats and "Galleggia non galleggia"

A unique feature of the Casale Carnival is the cardboard floats, built by participants using only cardboard and paper adhesive tape. Many of these floats are inspired by the vessels of the historic "Galleggia non galleggia" initiative, a cardboard boat race on the Po River created by the Amici del Po, which stands as a symbol of Casale's creativity and playful spirit.

The parade and competition categories

The parade winds through the historic center, starting from Piazza Castello in front of the Teatro Municipale and continuing through the city streets to Piazza Mazzini, where the masks are presented to the jury for the final awards ceremony. Competition categories include individuals, couples, groups, best cardboard float, school classes, as well as categories dedicated to local parishes and the municipalities of Monferrato.

An event for the whole community

Organized by the Municipality of Casale Monferrato in collaboration with local merchant, artisan, and agricultural associations, the Carnival involves schools, parishes, and groups from neighboring towns. Admission and registration are free, and the day concludes with the awarding of the most beautiful costumes and floats, decided by a jury that also includes young guest judges. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience the authentic spirit of a local festival within the elegant setting of one of Piedmont's art cities.
