Carrara's artist studios throw open their doors to the city
Carrara Studi Aperti is one of the most original events in the Tuscan art scene: for an entire weekend, artist workshops and sculpture studios in Carrara open their doors to the public, turning the entire urban fabric into a vast trail of widespread art. The city, the world's marble capital in the heart of the Massa-Carrara province in Tuscany, reveals the usually hidden places where contemporary creation is born.
The initiative involves dozens of active studios spread between the historic center and the mountain areas of the city, where the white marble of the Apuan Alps has been worked for centuries. Many workshops host artists from other regions or those without their own space, making collaborative hospitality one of the event's hallmarks: over two hundred professionals are involved, including sculptors, painters, ceramicists, and creatives of every discipline.
Artists welcome visitors into their spaces to talk about the creative process and the deep bond between art and the land. Shop windows in the center become temporary galleries, while museums and local institutions join the initiative: the mudaC โ Museo delle Arti di Carrara opens its collection in dialogue with the places of creation, and the Academy of Fine Arts offers special openings.
Alongside free visits to the workshops, the program offers themed guided tours starting from the Info Point, workshops for children, collective exhibitions, live performances, and evening concerts. A shuttle service connects the workshops scattered between the center and the mountains, allowing visitors to reach even the most isolated studios nestled in the quarry landscape.
Carrara Studi Aperti is curated by the A.P.S. Oltre Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Carrara, the Tuscany Region, and the UNESCO Creative Cities network, and is part of the Carrara Capital of Contemporary Art program. An appointment that confirms Carrara's vocation as an open-air laboratory for sculpture and contemporary Italian art.
The 2026 edition was held from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14, expanding the formula with 62 active workshops and over 200 artists spread between the historic center and the mountain areas. The inauguration was set for Friday the 12th at 2:30 PM; studios remained open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (Friday from 2:30 PM).
The mudaC โ Museo delle Arti di Carrara was accessible for the entire duration of the event, while the Academy of Fine Arts observed special opening hours. 10 guided tours by reservation departed from the Info Point in Piazza del Duomo (Circolo ARCI Michelangelo). Workshops for children were held at the Teatro di Terra, while Piazza delle Erbe hosted evening concerts from 9:30 PM.
Carrara can be reached by car via the A12 motorway (Carrara exit) or the A15. By train, the Carrara-Avenza station is connected to the Genoa-Pisa lines, and from there the center can be reached by city bus or taxi. The nearest airport is Galileo Galilei in Pisa, about an hour away.
The workshops can be visited free of charge. The Info Point is located in Piazza del Duomo, at the Circolo ARCI Michelangelo, where you can pick up materials and book guided tours. A digital map is available online (link and QR code) to locate all the studios.
We recommend booking guided tours and children's workshops in advance. A shuttle service is available to reach the mountain workshops. Wear comfortable shoes for walking tours in the historic center.
