About Masks On!

Every February, the Carnival Walk: Masks On! transforms Campagna, in the heart of the Salerno province, into a sprawling, vibrant celebration of confetti and costumes. Forget massive floats or grandstands: this is a joyful, roving parade that winds through the Quadrivio and the narrow alleys of the historic center, filled with decorated shop windows, costumed groups, and children chasing one another. The initiative is organized by the Pro Loco Città di Campagna APS in partnership with the local Chess Association and the Merchants' Association.

A Carnival experience on the move

The Carnival Walk: Masks On! is the February highlight that sees the town of Campagna, in the province of Salerno, open its streets to dressing up and playful fun. The concept is clear from its name: this isn't a parade to watch from a seat, but a walk to join in. Masks hit the streets, confetti flies from one sidewalk to the other, and the party moves with the people, without a stage to focus the attention in one spot.

The route showcases the two faces of the town: the Quadrivio, the modern commercial district, and the historic center, with its narrow alleys, stone portals, and stairways climbing toward the mountain. Crossing both in costume on the same afternoon is, ultimately, the simplest way to understand the true spirit of Campagna.

Organized by the Pro Loco and local associations

The event is brought to life by the Pro Loco Città di Campagna APS in collaboration with the Associazione Scacchistica Campagna (Chess Association) and the Associazione Commercianti (Merchants' Association). This choice speaks volumes about the event's character: the shops of the Quadrivio are not just a backdrop but an active part of the festivities, and the local community helps build the Carnival rather than just watching it.

The Pro Loco of Campagna is a historic landmark for the town's cultural life: it was the first Pro Loco to be registered in the Campania Regional Register and has been a member of the UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy) for over fifty years.

A family-friendly event

The Carnival Walk is designed primarily for children and their families. With confetti, streamers, and a mix of homemade and elaborate costumes, the atmosphere is that of a traditional town Carnival, where you recognize friends even under their makeup and where the fun requires no tickets or reservations. Visitors from out of town will find an accessible and spontaneous celebration, quite different from the large float-based carnivals found along the Salerno coast.

Campagna: between alleys and the Picentini Mountains

Campagna is a town of about seventeen thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, Campania, located about forty kilometers from the regional capital. The territory stretches from the alleys of the historic center to the trails of the Polveracchio, from the urban hubs of the Quadrivio to the olive groves of the interior, and includes hamlets such as Serradarce, Puglietta, Camaldoli, Galdo, and Santa Maria La Nova.

The town's calendar is packed year-round, and Carnival is just one chapter. Among the most iconic events promoted by the Pro Loco are:

  • I Fucanoli, on January 17th, blending devotion to Saint Anthony Abbot with fire folklore;
  • 'A Chiena, the famous water festival linked to the Tenza river, which intentionally floods the streets of the historic center in summer;
  • Portoni Ghiottoni, a food and cultural tour through the portals of the village;
  • Guerra dei Colori (War of Colors) and Giochi Senza Frazioni (Games Without Hamlets), collective challenges involving neighborhoods and hamlets.

Viewed in this sequence, the Carnival Walk is not an isolated event but the winter chapter of a city that has made street festivals its hallmark: water in summer, colors in August, and confetti in February.

What to expect

As this is a widespread event, the best advice is to arrive in costume and let yourself be carried away: the rhythm is set by the groups that form along the route. Dates vary each year according to the Carnival calendar and are announced by the Pro Loco Città di Campagna on their official channels and social media in the weeks leading up to the event.
