The Carnival of the Blue Island, between the Piazzetta and the Giardini della Flora Caprense
Carnevalissimo of Capri is the grand Carnival celebration that transforms the center of the most famous island in the Gulf of Naples every February. The heart of the festivities is the iconic Piazzetta — Piazza Umberto I — which fills for several days with masks, colors, music, and pure joy. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Capri (Province of Naples, Campania) and involves the entire island community: schools, associations, local merchants, and families all participate in creating an event designed primarily for children, yet capable of delighting adults as well.
The hallmark of the Capri Carnevalissimo is the unique theme chosen for each edition, around which all decorations, costumes, shows, and installations revolve. The streets and squares of the town are decorated to match the year's central motif, turning the entire village into a large open-air stage. This theme serves as the backdrop for the carnival court parades, processions of children in costume, and the traditional parade of allegorical floats crafted by students from the Axel Munthe Institute.
The program spans several days and various locations across the island. The Piazzetta hosts parades, concerts, and award ceremonies, while the Giardini della Flora Caprense serve as the children's village, featuring themed entertainment, workshops, and games. The festivities also include live music, dance shows, and local seasonal tastings, culminating on Shrove Tuesday with the biggest party and the best-costume competition.
More than just a simple masquerade, Carnevalissimo is a defining moment for Capri: an occasion when the island, far from the summer crowds, gathers around its families and youth. Admission to the events in the square is free, making the festival one of the most authentic and well-attended ways to experience Capri in winter, blending popular tradition, folklore, and fun for all ages.
Carnevalissimo 2026 in Capri chose the theme "The Saloon — A Carnival in the Old West": the center of the island dressed up as the Far West, with themed sets (sheriff's office, shop, bank, and saloon), stalls in the Piazzetta, and a mechanical bull for adults and children. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Capri, took place from February 13 to 17 between the Piazzetta and the Giardini della Flora Caprense, with the heart of the festivities occurring over the weekend and on Shrove Tuesday.
Capri is accessible exclusively by sea, via hydrofoils and ferries departing from Naples (Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa) and Sorrento. From the port of Marina Grande, you can reach the town center via the funicular or by bus to the Piazzetta.
Events are concentrated in Piazza Umberto I (the Piazzetta) and the Giardini della Flora Caprense, both in the center of Capri, as well as throughout the village streets.
Access to events in the square is free of charge. For the updated program, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Capri and local island press in the weeks leading up to Carnival.
