About Carnevale con Gioia

Every winter, Gioia del Colle bursts into color with the Carnevale con Gioia, a parade of masked groups and allegorical floats that brings the historic center to life with music, dancing, and pure joy. Promoted by the Historic Center Committee with the patronage of the Municipality, the event kicks off in Piazza Plebiscito and winds through Corso Garibaldi and the heart of the town, concluding with entertainment and awards for the best groups. It is a popular festival designed for families and children, reviving the ancient local carnival tradition, famous for its grotesque masks and vernacular characters.

Carnevale con Gioia in Gioia del Colle

In the heart of the Bari Murgia, the Carnevale con Gioia is the annual appointment that, between January and February, fills the streets of Gioia del Colle, in the Metropolitan City of Bari (Puglia), with cheer. Promoted by the Historic Center Committee with the patronage of the Municipality of Gioia del Colle and in collaboration with local entertainment groups, the event transforms the town center into a large open-air stage where masks, colors, and music take center stage.

The parade: allegorical floats and masked groups

The highlight is the parade, which sets off from Piazza Plebiscito, the gathering point for the masked groups. From there, the procession winds along Corso Garibaldi, Via Gioberti, Piazza XX Settembre, Via Manin, and Via Cavour, before returning to the starting point. The parade features masked groups and allegorical floats created by local associations, schools, youth committees, and dance troupes, often inspired by fairy-tale themes, irony, or current events. Upon returning to the square, the festivities continue with entertainment and the awards ceremony to crown the most beautiful groups and floats.

A carnival with ancient roots

The Gioia carnival has deep, centuries-old roots. According to local custom, the carnival season begins on January 17th, the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, and ends on Shrove Tuesday, as the local dialect proverb «Sand'Andùne, màsckere e sùne» (Saint Anthony, masks and sounds) reminds us. Gioia's folk culture is famous for its six grotesque masks — most notably Solmozzavino, a young braggart crowned King of the Carnival, along with Donna Sofia la Bos, Marcoffie, M'ba Ptruc, M'ba Rocctid, and M'ba Filippud — figures that embodied the vices and virtues of the farming community, amidst poetic competitions in the local vernacular, parties, and dances like the Gioia-style pizzica-pizzica.

A festival for the whole family

Carnevale con Gioia is a free event designed for families and children: costumes, confetti, music, and dancing make this festive afternoon the perfect opportunity to experience the town in high spirits. The streets of the historic center, closed to traffic during the parade, fill with onlookers and masks of all ages.

Gioia del Colle, between history and Primitivo

Located between Bari and Taranto, Gioia del Colle is known for its imposing Norman-Swabian castle and for being one of the homelands of the Primitivo di Gioia del Colle DOC wine. A visit to the historic center during the Carnival is the ideal opportunity to discover, beyond the festival, the cultural and gastronomic heritage of this corner of Puglia.

Carnevale con Gioia — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Carnevale con Gioia will renew the appointment with the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups in the historic center of Gioia del Colle. As of now, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: as per tradition, the festival takes place during the Carnival period, between late January and Shrove Tuesday.
