The popular Zambana carnival, featuring a masked parade, local brass band, and community lunch
The Carneval en Piaza di Zambana is the carnival festival held in the village of Zambana, within the Terre d'Adige municipality, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). As part of the wider Rotaliana Königsberg Carnival calendar, it is one of the most cherished events in the Piana Rotaliana, the wine-growing region north of Trento where carnival remains a community ritual that brings together young and old alike.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Zambana, for whom the carnival represents their "first major commitment of the year." The Pro Loco is supported by numerous local associations—from hunting and pensioners' groups to cycling clubs, football teams, ski clubs, and the local brass band—along with a large number of volunteers whose enthusiasm yields rewarding results every year. It is precisely this social fabric that makes the Zambana carnival an authentic celebration, deeply rooted in the community.
The day revolves around the parade of masks and floats through the village streets, accompanied by the Zambana brass band, and the convivial moment of the open-air lunch in the square, featuring traditional Trentino dishes.
The Zambana carnival preserves several typical Trentino customs. These include the complimentary lunch offered to the village youth and, most importantly, the lunch delivered to the homes of the elderly, prepared by the young women of Zambana: a gesture of solidarity that makes the festival a moment of cohesion for the entire community. Finally, there is the traditional raffle, the proceeds of which help fund the following year's edition.
Open to all and free to attend, the Carneval en Piaza di Zambana is the ideal opportunity to experience carnival in a village setting, far from the large crowds: confetti, masks, Trentino flavors, and the warm welcome of a community that turns the festival into a shared heritage in the heart of the Piana Rotaliana.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, Zambana celebrated carnival together with the other towns of the Piana Rotaliana during the Children's Carnival day. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco Zambana, enlivened the village center with a parade of masks and floats.
The day's program included a lunch in the square at 12:00 PM featuring polenta, sauerkraut, and luganega sausage, a masked parade from 2:30 PM accompanied by the Zambana brass band, and from 3:30 PM, entertainment and games for children hosted by the Don Bosco Oratory. A special moment was reserved for the local conscripts, with the traditional passing of the canarola.
