Floats, masks, and the Great Rafanata in the Val d'Agri
In Paterno, a town in the Val d'Agri in the province of Potenza, carnival has its own name: Carnesciale Paternese. It's not just any festival, but an event listed in the intangible cultural heritage of the Basilicata Region, a recognition that seals its historical, social, and cultural value. As the municipal administration has emphasized, the Carnesciale "represents the most authentic soul of our community," the result of the collective work of generations, associations, and volunteers.
Among the most beloved events is the Tasting of La Grande Rafanata: rafanata is the typical dish of Lucanian carnival, a rustic omelet made with eggs, cheese, and especially horseradish (the "poor man's truffle"), with a strong and unmistakable flavor. In Paterno, its collective preparation has become a ritual that opens the festivities, accompanied by a masked DJ set.
The highlight is the parade of floats and the masked procession: artisanal creations built for months by local groups, which color the streets with music and confetti. For the little ones, there's the Cartoon Village, while the festival concludes with major concerts in the square that draw crowds from all over the Val d'Agri.
Organized with the support of the Municipality of Paterno and local associations, the Carnesciale is one of those festivals that build community: children, young people, and the elderly work side-by-side to keep alive a tradition that, edition after edition, continues to grow.
The 2026 edition of the Carnesciale Paternese is scheduled for Saturday, February 14, and Sunday, February 15, 2026. Two days that blend taste, masks, and spectacle, under the banner of its recognition as intangible cultural heritage of the Basilicata Region. The protagonists are the 13th edition of the Grande Rafanata and the grand parade of floats.
