About Review of Bagpipes

The Review of Bagpipes and Shawms of Southern Italy brings, every year on December 27th, ancient pastoral music through the streets of Viggiano. Musicians in traditional costume walk through the historic center, performing devotional songs and Christmas melodies with the bagpipe and the shawm, two of the oldest and most iconic instruments of Basilicata.

Christmas to the sound of the bagpipe

The Review of Bagpipes and Shawms of Southern Italy is one of the most evocative Christmas events in Viggiano, the City of the Harp and Music, in the province of Potenza. Every year, around December 27th, the historic center of the village fills with the ancient notes of the bagpipe and the shawm, wind instruments linked to the agricultural and pastoral tradition of the area.

Instruments of Lucanian identity

Bagpipes and shawms are among the oldest folk instruments and are part of the identity of Viggiano, Basilicata, and much of Southern Italy. For centuries, their sound announced the arrival of Christmas: shepherd-musicians would go from house to house and in front of the nativity scenes, and doors would open, especially for the joy of children, who gathered to listen to the melodies.

Musicians in costume through the village streets

During the review, musicians in traditional pastoral costume walk through the historic center, performing devotional songs, pastoral tunes, and spontaneous pieces to revive the most authentic spirit of Christmas. The initiative is promoted by the Folk Group "La Chicchirichi" with the patronage of the Municipality of Viggiano, and takes place in the afternoon in a collected and warm Christmas atmosphere.

Experiencing Lucanian Christmas

Attending the Bagpipe Review means immersing oneself in the musical traditions of the Val d'Agri and rediscovering a sound heritage that links Viggiano to its pastoral roots. An opportunity to visit the village during the holidays, among nativity scenes, decorated alleys, and the ancient notes of the instruments of transhumance.
