A tradition that comes from afar

The Carlevà dea Spèza - the Spezia Carnival in local dialect - is one of the most deeply rooted events in the city of La Spezia, in Liguria. Its origins date back to 1869, making it a centuries-old tradition that attracts thousands of people to the city center every year.

The grand parade in the city center

The heart of the celebration is the parade that crosses the city center: from the meeting point, the procession winds its way along Corso Cavour, Via Chiodo, and Piazza Verdi, concluding in the large Piazza Europa. Floats, costumed groups, children from schools and kindergartens, families, and associations parade by in a riot of color and joy.

19th-century costumes

A characteristic element of the Spezia Carnival is the Spezia masks and the 19th-century costumes, which recall the clothing of the late 19th century and tell the long story of the event. A touch that links today's Carnival to its origins, giving historical depth to the celebration.
