Classical and contemporary music on an island in the Tuscan Archipelago
The Capraia Musica Festival is the premier classical and contemporary music event on the island of Capraia Isola, in the Province of Livorno, in the heart of the Tuscan Archipelago. Founded in 2006 and organized by the Ars Musica Capraia association, the festival has become a benchmark for chamber music lovers over the years, successfully blending interpretive excellence with the pristine beauty of one of the Mediterranean's wildest islands.
What makes the Capraia Musica Festival an unrepeatable experience is the constant dialogue between music and landscape. Concerts are not held in conventional concert halls, but in the island's most atmospheric locations: the intimate Church of Sant'Antonio, the charming San Francesco Cloister, and even natural sea caves reachable only by boat, where music resonates at sunset between the sea and the cliffs. It is a unique way to experience great music, far from the routine of city concert seasons.
The program alternates between leading names on the Italian and international music scene and young performers selected through advanced training programs and international competitions. Over the years, the festival has hosted artists such as pianist Alexander Lonquich, the Quartetto di Cremona, pianist Benedetto Lupo, cellist Mario Brunello, and many others. Alongside the concerts, the festival offers masterclasses for young musicians and musical workshops for children, confirming its strong educational commitment.
The festival has developed a strong identity that goes beyond the concert stage. In collaboration with the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, it offers concert-treks and musical walks that combine listening with the discovery of the island's natural environment. A significant part of the project is also dedicated to a musical event for the prison community on the island of Gorgona, a testament to the festival's focus on the social value of music. Due to its musical, artistic, and landscape value, the event has also received support from the Ministry of Culture.
Difficult to reach and special precisely for this reason, the Capraia Musica Festival represents one of the most distinctive summer cultural events in the Tuscan islands. Those who choose to attend do not just go to a concert; they embark on a small journey: by ship to Capraia, and then on foot or by boat through the island's hidden corners, to rediscover music in its most authentic spaces.
The 2026 edition marks a special milestone: the 21st edition celebrates the twenty years of activity of the Capraia Musica Festival, founded in 2006. For ten days, from August 20 to 30, the island of Capraia becomes a stage spread across churches, cloisters, and natural caves.
The program brings together great performers and young talents, with a wide section dedicated to contemporary music. Alongside the concerts, training paths and initiatives that intertwine music, nature, and social commitment return.
Among the announced protagonists for the 21st edition are some of the most important names on the Italian and international music scene:
The program includes solo recitals, chamber concerts, and events dedicated to contemporary music, with performances of works by living composers and several world premieres by Luca Fialdini, Mark-Antoine Houn, Johanna Doderer, Bruno Mereu, and Marco Benetti.
In collaboration with the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the festival offers concert-treks and musical walks that combine the listening experience with the discovery of Capraia's natural environment. A concert dedicated to the prison community on the island of Gorgona is also planned.
Concerts take place in the island's most evocative locations, including the Church of Sant'Antonio, the San Francesco Cloister, and caves accessible by boat.
Capraia Isola can be reached by ferry from the port of Livorno: maritime connections are managed by ferry companies with seasonal schedules increased during the summer (the crossing takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes). On the island, travel is on foot; some concerts in the caves are accessible by boat.
Tickets are generally purchased on-site. For special concerts, masterclasses, and concert-treks, it is recommended to check the festival's official website and social media channels.
Capraia offers hotels, B&Bs, and holiday homes in the village and at the port: given the island's limited accommodation capacity, booking well in advance is essential during high season.
