The Pro Loco Carnival celebration in the Alto Aterno valley
The Capitignano Carnival is the annual celebration that brings the small town of Capitignano to life in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of the Abruzzo Alto Aterno. Organized by the Pro Loco of Capitignano, the event offers an afternoon of fun, featuring carnival masks, music, and dancing open to the entire community.
The festival is designed primarily for the children and youth of the town, but it brings together residents and visitors from neighboring municipalities for a day of shared entertainment. Confetti, colorful costumes, music, and dancing transform the Multipurpose Hall near the sports field into a festive space sheltered from the winter mountain cold. It is a village carnival in its most authentic form: without large allegorical floats, but with the community spirit that keeps the popular traditions of the small Apennine villages alive.
The Capitignano festival is part of the regional project "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo", coordinated by UNPLI Abruzzo (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy), which in 2026 brought together over thirty carnival events across the four provinces of Abruzzo. It is a way to network and promote local village festivals while supporting the role of the Pro Loco as guardians of local traditions.
Capitignano is a mountain village in the upper Aterno valley, located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and not far from Lake Campotosto, the largest reservoir in the Abruzzo region. A land of ancient pastoral traditions, the town preserves a historical and natural heritage that provides the backdrop for events curated by local associations. The Carnival is one of the occasions when the community gathers to celebrate its local identity in a simple and inclusive way.
The 2026 Capitignano Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, from 3:30 PM to 8:30 PM, at the Multipurpose Hall of the Capitignano sports field (AQ). The event, curated by the Pro Loco of Capitignano, offered an afternoon of fun with carnival masks, music, and dancing, aimed primarily at the children and families of the town and neighboring municipalities. The festival was part of the regional calendar "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo," coordinated by UNPLI Abruzzo, which enlivened the squares and streets of Abruzzo's villages with over thirty events between February 14 and 21, 2026.
