Wine tourism in Upper Piedmont among the Nebbiolo vineyards of Boca
Every last weekend of May, Podere ai Valloni takes part in Cantine Aperte, the event that the Movimento Turismo del Vino has dedicated to wine tourism across Italy since 1993. In Boca, a small town in the province of Novara in the heart of Upper Piedmont, the winery opens its vineyards and cellar doors to welcome enthusiasts and curious visitors to one of the region's most fascinating wine-growing areas.
Founded in 1980 and certified organic since 2014, Podere ai Valloni cultivates approximately three hectares of vineyards with historic local grape varieties: Nebbiolo, Vespolina, and Uva Rara. Its vines produce wines under the Boca DOC and Colline Novaresi DOC appellations, including the Boca Vigna Cristiana and the red wines Gratus and Sass Russ. With an annual production of about twelve thousand bottles, the winery tells the story of an authentic Upper Piedmont, defined by volcanic soils and mountain viticulture far removed from mass production.
During the Cantine Aperte weekend, Podere ai Valloni offers two ways to visit:
The walk takes visitors through the rows of vines and continues into the cellar, where the winemaker and staff explain the work done in the vineyard and the winery. The tastings highlight the finesse of the Nebbiolo-based red wines, a classic expression of the Novara Hills.
Cantine Aperte is not just a wine event; it is an opportunity to discover a territory less known than the Langhe and Monferrato, yet rich in history and identity. Around Boca, routes wind through hills, forests, and paths such as the Cammino delle Colline Novaresi, perfect for extending your day. The event, held throughout Piedmont and Italy, makes this corner of the Novara province an ideal stop for those who love slow, conscious wine tourism.
The 2026 edition, which coincided with the 34th national edition of the Movimento Turismo del Vino event, was held on Saturday, May 30 (from 3:00 PM) and Sunday, May 31 (sessions at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM). A new feature this year was the platter enriched by amuse-bouches from the Ristorante Pinocchio in Borgomanero.
On Sunday, local tourism operators were also present, including Progetto Transumรฉ, Itinerarium, and the Cammino delle Colline Novaresi, highlighting the link between wine and the discovery of the Novara territory.
Two options: free guided tours without reservation with complimentary tastings, or tours by reservation with a more extensive tasting including a platter of local products (with amuse-bouches from Ristorante Pinocchio in Borgomanero).
Podere ai Valloni is located at Strada della Traversagna 1 in Boca (NO), in Upper Piedmont. By car, take the A26 motorway (exit Romagnano Sesia-Ghemme) and continue towards Boca. The most convenient train stations are Romagnano Sesia or Borgomanero, on the Novara-Varallo line.
Free guided tours do not require a reservation; tastings with a platter of local products are paid and require a reservation. To book: call +39 351 704 9154 or email [email protected]. Winery information: call +39 0322 87332, [email protected].
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the vineyard walk and booking the gastronomic pairings in advance.
