In the heart of the Aversa-Atella area, in Frattaminore (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania), the Candlemas Festival is much more than a liturgical recurrence: it is the very identity of the town. The community has celebrated it for over two hundred years around the parish of Saint Simeon the Prophet, and according to local sources, Frattaminore is the only municipality in Italy to celebrate the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple in such a distinctive way.
The true emblem of the day is the confetti ricci, sweets with a crinkled, irregular surface that are exclusive to this territory. In popular tradition, they represent prosperity, happiness, and abundance, symbolizing the joy stemming from the Incarnation. At the end of the solemn mass, when the statue of the Child is placed in the arms of the elderly Simeon, the joyful tossing of the confetti ricci over the crowd begins: it is the gesture that everyone, both locals and those who have returned for the occasion, awaits with the most emotion.
The heart of the celebrations is the scenic re-enactment of the meeting between Saint Simeon and the Virgin Mary. In the square in front of the church, the statue of the prophet, carried on shoulders, awaits the arrival of the effigy of the Madonna with the Child; when the two statues meet, the celebrant takes Jesus from Mary's hands and places him in the arms of the elderly Simeon, accompanied by the festive sound of bells and the release of doves, a sign of peace.
During the service, candles are blessed as a symbol of Christ, the "light to enlighten the nations," which families then keep in their homes. The festival symbolically marks the transition from the darkness of winter to the awakening of spring, a theme with roots in traditions of light far older than Christianity.
In the evening, after the torchlight procession through the streets of the historic center, the religious festival turns into a public celebration: in Piazza Umberto I, the local food festival takes place, featuring cured meat specialties, local sweets, and musical entertainment. It is the convivial moment that closes the day and unites the entire community of Frattaminore.
Organized by the Municipality of Frattaminore together with the Saint Simeon the Prophet Parish, the Candlemas Festival attracts believers, curious onlookers, and visitors from the neighboring towns of the Naples and Caserta provinces every year. Those arriving from outside discover an authentic, deep-rooted, and surprising tradition capable of telling the story of faith, history, and the flavors of a small town in Campania in just one day.
The 2026 Candlemas Festival renewed in Frattaminore (Naples) the ritual that has identified the town for over two hundred years. Around February 2nd, the community gathered at the Saint Simeon the Prophet Parish for the blessing of the candles and the solemn mass, followed by the re-enactment of the meeting between the elderly Simeon and the Madonna with the Child and the highly anticipated tossing of the confetti ricci. In the evening, the torchlight procession and the local food festival in Piazza Umberto I concluded a day of faith and popular celebration.
The program of the Candlemas of Frattaminore follows a consolidated structure every year, spread between February 1st and 2nd.
Details on times and side events are announced year by year by the Municipality of Frattaminore and the Saint Simeon the Prophet Parish in the days leading up to the festival.
The most awaited moment is the tossing of the confetti ricci, sweets unique in their kind, which follows the moving re-enactment of the meeting between Saint Simeon and the Child Jesus. Also not to be missed is the evening candlelight procession and the local food festival in Piazza Umberto I.
The celebrations take place at the Saint Simeon the Prophet Parish and in Piazza Umberto I, in the center of Frattaminore (NA), postal code 80020.
