The historic masks of the Roero region bring the town square to life with treats, surprises, and fun for the little ones.
In the heart of the Roero, a land of hills, vineyards, and orchards in the province of Cuneo, the Canale Carnival is one of the most beloved events for local families. Every year, when the carnival season arrives, the main square of the town of Canale turns into a stage for a popular festival filled with masks, confetti, sweets, and plenty of cheer, designed especially for children.
The true stars of the day are the two historic local masks: Conte Birbet and Contessa Favorita. As tradition dictates, they act as hosts, welcoming guests of all ages and spreading good humor among the masked crowd. The name Conte Birbet is closely linked to the food and wine identity of this area: Birbèt is the famous sweet, aromatic wine of the Roero, a symbol of a land that is also the capital of Arneis wines and home to the fragrant Pesche di Canale.
Alongside the historic masks, every edition offers surprises specifically designed for the little ones. Among the most recent additions are the New Mascots, ready to debut in the square to the delight of children, accompanied by the classic distribution of treats and moments of entertainment. It is a festival that focuses on childhood, families, and anyone who wants to dress up and celebrate in good company.
The Canale Carnival is part of the rich tradition of the Roero and Langhe Carnivals, where each town has its own symbolic masks representing the community and its bond with the land. Coordinated by the municipal administration and local associations, the event is an opportunity to rediscover the village's identity and experience an authentic day of celebration, far from large-scale events and close to the genuine spirit of a village festival.
On Sunday, February 22, 2026, Canale celebrated the Carnival with its customary gathering in the square. Leading the festivities, as per tradition, were the territory's iconic masks: Conte Birbet and Contessa Favorita, ready to play hosts and spread joy to all those present.
The town square became the center of the celebration, featuring historic masks and new attractions designed for the little ones. The real surprise of this edition was the New Mascots, debuting in the square to the delight of children, along with the distribution of treats and plenty of entertainment dedicated to families and children.
