The Irpinian leg of the regional theatre festival, hosted at the Libero Spazio d'Arte on Via Partenio
Every summer, Campania transforms into a widespread stage thanks to the Campania Teatro Festival, an event supported by the Campania Region and organized by the Fondazione Campania dei Festival under the artistic direction of Ruggero Cappuccio. Alongside the historic theatres and monumental courtyards of Naples, the programme has expanded for years to other provinces: in Avellino, the festival finds its home at Libero Spazio d'Arte, the cultural centre on Via Partenio born from a private initiative and now one of the city's most vibrant cultural hubs.
The formula is simple yet ambitious: one single event, dozens of venues. In the 2026 edition, the nineteenth, the programme was spread across 16 locations between the Neapolitan capital and the provincial territories, with 31 consecutive days of performances, over 150 total events, and more than 80 companies involved. For the Irpinia audience, this means being able to attend productions born within a regional and international circuit right in the heart of Avellino, without having to travel to Naples every time.
The festival is multidisciplinary by vocation, and its programme is divided into several sections that coexist throughout the month:
A very substantial part of the programme consists of world premieres: in 2026, there were 67 out of 105 theatrical productions, a figure that clearly shows how the event functions as a production laboratory and not just a showcase.
Libero Spazio d'Arte, also known by the acronym LSD, is a theatre cooperative that opened a true cultural hub on Via Partenio, in the heart of Avellino. Throughout the year, it hosts theatre, singing, and dance courses, masterclasses, study paths on Shakespeare, writing and photography workshops, as well as a regular performance schedule. For this venue, hosting a stop of the Campania Teatro Festival means putting its stage at the disposal of a wider audience and bringing a piece of the regional festival to the Province of Avellino.
One of the distinctive features of the event is the popular pricing policy, maintained for ten years under the direction of Ruggero Cappuccio: tickets remain between 5 and 8 euros for all shows, including provincial venues. It is a choice that has a concrete effect on the audience, as it breaks down economic barriers and allows students, families, and casual spectators to see more than one title in the same month.
Performances in Avellino are generally held in the late afternoon or early evening in an intimate hall that fosters a close relationship between actors and spectators. Its location in the city centre makes it easy to walk from the shopping streets and combine an evening at the theatre with dinner in one of the local spots in the Irpinian capital. Those arriving from other towns in the province will find Libero Spazio d'Arte a reference point that is easy to reach by car along the main roads converging on Avellino.
The choice to move outside of Naples is not just an organizational detail: it is the practical translation of the idea of Campania as a widespread cultural laboratory, where contemporary theatre does not remain confined to the capital. Avellino, with its tradition of cultural associations and an audience fond of prose, is one of the nodes of this network. For those living in Irpinia, the Campania Teatro Festival is now the summer appointment that brings the latest theatrical research to the city.
The nineteenth edition of the Campania Teatro Festival, the tenth under the artistic direction of Ruggero Cappuccio, took place from June 12 to July 12, 2026. The programme was published online on May 27, and ticket sales started on June 5. Thirty-one consecutive days, 16 venues, over 150 events, and more than 80 companies: numbers that led the event to close with approximately 40,000 attendees, a record for the festival.
In the widespread programme of this edition, the Libero Spazio d'Arte in Avellino was the Irpinian venue for the festival. On Sunday, June 14 at 7 PM, «Il D.N.A. di Bonobo» debuted there, a show directed by Roberta Prisco and produced by the Associazione Vernicefresca, with original music by Francesco Di Maso, assistant direction by Alberto Grosso, and stage photos by Paolo Visone. At the heart of the dramaturgy is a group of adolescents constrained by pack dynamics and the need for belonging: during a night in the woods, one of them, Mario, disappears after a game goes too far, and the fear of being discovered ends up weighing more than the truth. Individual identity dissolves into group logic, and guilt becomes shared.
Alongside the Italian section, the largest with 35 productions, the 2026 edition offered an international section of 8 shows, 33 special projects, 4 dance titles, 4 literature appointments, 7 music events, 5 sports opera titles, 4 exhibitions, and 31 after-festival events. Among the international debuts were productions from Colombia, Spain, and Argentina, in some cases presented for the first time in Italy.
The popular pricing policy was also confirmed in 2026: tickets from 5 to 8 euros for all shows, including venues outside Naples such as the one in Avellino.
