From 0 to 3000: 43 km of pure ascent from the sea to the volcano's summit
The Brooks Etna Supermarathon is one of the most unique mountain running events in the world: 43 kilometers of pure ascent, from sea level to the 3,000-meter mark on Mount Etna. Its motto, "From 0 to 3000", says it all: you start from the beach of Marina di Cottone, in the territory of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, and finish just below the summit craters of Europe's highest active volcano. A unique feature of the race is that the finish line is visible from the very start, suspended high up on the mountain.
The 43 km course winds through the historic centers of the Etna towns — Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, Piedimonte Etneo, Linguaglossa, and Castiglione di Sicilia — before joining the Mareneve regional road that leads from Linguaglossa to Piano Provenzana, at an altitude of 1,800 meters. From here on, the race turns into a true high-altitude trail run on dirt paths, leading up to the volcanic sand gully that precedes the finish. This is why organizers define it as the longest uphill race in the world.
Linguaglossa, a town in the Province of Catania on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna, serves as the logistical heart of the event: this is where bib collection, the technical briefing, and the departure of the shuttles that transport athletes to the seaside starting point at dawn take place. The race is organized by ASD Etna Trail under the direction of Carmelo Santoro and serves as an international showcase for the Etna village and all of Sicily.
In addition to the classic 43 km Supermarathon, the program includes the Off-Road, a 14.5 km race entirely on dirt trails that starts from Piano Provenzana (1,800 m) and climbs toward the Volcanological Observatory, before descending toward the finish line along the volcanic sand gully. This format allows even those not tackling the entire ascent from the sea to experience the high altitudes of Mount Etna.
The 18th edition of the Brooks Etna Supermarathon was held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, confirming the appeal of one of the toughest uphill races in the world. All 500 available bibs were sold out more than three months in advance, a sign of the event's growing popularity, with athletes representing 17 nations.
In the men's category, Giuseppe Montello, a former biathlete from Tolmezzo, triumphed with a time of 3h42'51", ahead of Giuseppe Privitera from Zafferana Etnea (3h53'46") and Francesco Mangano (4h06'06"). In the women's field, Denise Zacco won in 4h30'42", with Antonella Ciaramella second (4h52'49") and Estefania Arvelaez third (5h04'40").
The route led competitors from Marina di Cottone up to an altitude of approximately 2,810 meters, passing through the towns of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, Piedimonte Etneo, Linguaglossa, and Castiglione di Sicilia. The finisher's medal, made of natural wood and plexiglass with a white lanyard, celebrated the achievement of those who completed the climb.
