The award celebrating Sicilian excellence in the shadow of Europe's oldest tree
The Targa d'Argento Castagno dei Cento Cavalli is one of the most cherished events of the summer in Sant'Alfio, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Catania nestled on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna. Every year, during the last week of August, the picturesque Piazza Duomo transforms into an open-air stage for a ceremony that honors outstanding Sicilian personalities, featuring a parade of well-known faces from the worlds of culture, entertainment, and media.
The award takes its name from the Castagno dei Cento Cavalli (Chestnut Tree of the Hundred Horses), the oldest and largest monumental tree in Europe, considered one of the longest-lived chestnut trees in the world. According to legend, a queen and her retinue of one hundred knights found shelter under its branches during a storm, giving rise to the name that made Sant'Alfio famous worldwide. Protected as a natural heritage site, the tree is the heart of the town's identity and has inspired an award that aims to promote the region's image both in Italy and abroad.
The event presents awards to men and women who have excelled in various fields: culture, entertainment, journalism, legality, science, business, and sports. Over the years, the Sant'Alfio stage has welcomed actors, singers, journalists, athletes, and executives, with special mentions dedicated to the themes of information and civic commitment. The evenings are hosted by Sicilian television presenters and enriched by musical performances and entertainment.
The Targa d'Argento represents the pinnacle of the Sant'Alfio Summer, the rich calendar of events that brings the Etna village to life during the summer season. For the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Sant'Alfio, who oversee the organization, the evening is above all a moment of identity, community, and recognition for those who honor Sicily with their talent and dedication.
The ceremony takes place in the square with free admission, usually starting around 9:00 PM, and attracts a large audience of residents, tourists, and curious visitors drawn by the town's unique setting and the presence of illustrious guests. It is also a precious opportunity to discover Sant'Alfio, its natural heritage, and the traditions of the Sicilian Region.
The Targa d'Argento Castagno dei Cento Cavalli returns in August 2026 to Sant'Alfio, on the slopes of Mount Etna. The event will be held as usual in Piazza Duomo, in the evening, with free admission.
At the moment, the exact date and the list of honorees for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Sant'Alfio release the full program.
