The Sicilian stage of the Next Pro Italian Rollerski Cup, at the foot of Mount Etna
The Italian Rollerski Cup – Linguaglossa Stage is the Sicilian highlight of the national Next Pro circuit, dedicated to rollerskiing—the summer discipline for cross-country skiers using specialized rollerskis on asphalt. The race takes place in Linguaglossa, a town on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna in the province of Catania, and stands as the only event on the federal calendar held in Southern Italy, set in an environment made unique by Europe's highest volcano.
The event traditionally spans two days. The first is dedicated to the sprint, a fast-paced and spectacular race winding through the historic center of Linguaglossa, where spectators can watch the athletes up close. The second day features the most demanding and iconic race of the stage: the freestyle uphill race, which takes competitors along the provincial road toward Piano Provenzana in the Etna Nord ski resort, finishing amidst the woods with an elevation gain that tests the best Italian specialists.
The event is held in memory of the Greco family, figures deeply linked to the history and skiing tradition of Linguaglossa. It is organized by the Sci Club Linguaglossa Etna Nord, led by Umberto Greco, who successfully brought high-level rollerskiing back to the Etna slopes. The competition also awards titles and points valid for the Next Pro Italian Cup and, in some editions, for the Italian Uphill Championships.
The Linguaglossa stage draws national team athletes, clubs from across the country, and distinguished guests from the world of Nordic skiing. Alongside the Elite categories, youth races are held—from Children to Pulcini—confirming the event's commitment to promoting the sport. The stunning scenery, nestled between the volcano, Etna's vineyards, and the villages of the province of Catania in Sicily, makes this Sicilian trip one of the most appreciated on the entire circuit.
Linguaglossa is a gateway to the Etna Park on the northern side and is famous for its wines, pine forests, and the Piano Provenzana resort. The presence of rollerskiing in the summer months combines sport, tourism, and the promotion of a territory that embraces the volcano in every season.
The Sicilian stage of the Next Pro Italian Rollerski Cup returns to Linguaglossa on June 27-28, 2026, as confirmed by the FISI federal calendar. The program includes the sprint on Saturday, June 27, and the freestyle uphill race on Sunday, June 28, along the climb toward Piano Provenzana in the Etna Nord resort. The event, organized by the Sci Club Linguaglossa Etna Nord, renews the summer appointment that brings high-level rollerskiing to the foot of the volcano in the province of Catania.
Linguaglossa can be reached by car via the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Fiumefreddo exit) and the SS120 road. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away. The reference train station for those arriving from the Ionian coast is Taormina-Giardini.
The sprint race is held in the historic center of Linguaglossa; the uphill race takes place along the road climbing toward Piano Provenzana, in the Etna Nord resort.
The event is free for the public. We recommend wearing clothing suitable for the altitude and the temperature fluctuations typical of Etna's mountain areas, even in summer.
