The great Mediterranean offshore regatta connecting Puglia to Greece
For forty years, the Brindisi-Corfu International Regatta has been the most anticipated sailing event in the southern Adriatic and one of the most prestigious offshore races in the entire Mediterranean. Established in 1986, it connects the port of Brindisi, in the heart of the Salento region, to the Greek island of Corfu along a 104-nautical-mile open-sea course. It is more than just a sporting competition: it is a popular celebration that enlivens the city's seafront for days, honoring the historic bond of friendship between the two shores of the Ionian Sea.
In the days leading up to the start, the Regina Margherita seafront transforms into the Regatta Village, set up right next to the docks where the competing vessels are moored. The area hosts a continuous stream of concerts, musical performances, conferences, food and wine events showcasing the flavors of Puglia, and entertainment for families and enthusiasts alike. The most spectacular moment is the fireworks display that illuminates the waters of the inner harbor on the eve of the departure, bidding farewell to the crews with a traditional welcome ceremony.
The fleet sets sail from the Punta Riso Breakwater, a panoramic vantage point from which thousands of locals watch the spectacle of the unfurled sails every year. From there, the boats—offshore yachts, monohulls, and multihulls—tackle the crossing of the Adriatic to Corfu, where the event concludes with the awards ceremony. The regatta is organized by the Circolo della Vela Brindisi in collaboration with the Marina Gouvia Sailing Club of Corfu, under the aegis of the Italian Sailing Federation (VIII Zone).
Since the first edition in 1986, which was reserved only for local Brindisi boats, the regatta has grown to attract over a hundred crews from nine nations. Over the decades, it has become a symbol of the maritime twinning between Brindisi and Corfu and a formidable driver for nautical tourism across the entire province. Today, it represents one of the highlights of the Puglian summer, successfully blending competitive sailing with the promotion of the territory, the sea, and the culture of Salento.
The fortieth edition of the Brindisi-Corfu International Regatta, scheduled from June 4 to 9, 2026, marked a historic milestone for Puglian sailing. Over a hundred boats from the most important Italian clubs and nine nations were expected, ready to compete along the 104 miles separating Brindisi from the island of Corfu.
The program opened on May 31 with the Solidarity Sailing event and the inauguration of the exhibition dedicated to the «40 years of history» of the regatta, set up at the Casa del Turista. From June 4, the Regina Margherita seafront hosted the Regatta Village, featuring concerts, conferences, and food and wine events. On June 6, the welcome ceremony for the crews preceded the great fireworks display over the inner harbor, while the start was set for 12:00 PM on Sunday, June 7, from the Punta Riso Breakwater. The event concluded on June 9 in Corfu with the awards ceremony.
The Regatta Village is set up on the Regina Margherita seafront in the center of Brindisi. The start of the fleet can be viewed from the Punta Riso Breakwater.
Brindisi is served by the Salento Airport (about 6 km from the center) and the train station, which is just a few minutes' walk from the seafront. By car, it can be reached via the SS379, taking the Brindisi Centro exit.
