The Carlevè 'd Brandiss: masks, allegorical floats, and tradition in the heart of the Chivassese area
The Brandizzo Carnival, known in Piedmontese as Carlevè 'd Brandiss, is the most heartfelt popular event in Brandizzo, a town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, overlooking the left bank of the Po River along the route connecting the regional capital to Chivasso. Reaching its 57th edition in 2026, the carnival is organized by the Brandizzo Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality, involving schools, associations, and families in weeks of festivities every year.
The identity of the Brandizzo Carnival is rooted in its two historic masks, the Bela Cusôtera and the Gran Giardiniere, accompanied by a court of ladies and pages. Every year, two citizens are chosen to portray them: their coronation officially opens the carnival season and represents, as local officials often note, the very identity of the town. These masks accompany the community throughout all events, from the ceremony of handing over the keys to the city to the grand final parade.
The most anticipated moment is the parade of allegorical floats, which, along with historic, folkloric, and costumed groups, travels through the town center amidst music, confetti, and colors. It is a festive day for the whole family, where Brandizzo transforms into a large open-air pageant. Alongside the parade, there is the evening masquerade party and the court's visits to local schools, a sign of a carnival deeply rooted in community life.
During the day of the parade, the Pro Loco's food stall is always active, offering a selection of traditional dishes: beans with pork rinds, salamella sausage sandwiches, and the essential apple fritters. It is the perfect opportunity to warm up and enjoy Piedmontese conviviality in the heart of winter.
The Brandizzo Carnival is one of those town festivals that captures the authenticity of the lesser-known Piedmont, far from major tourist flows but rich in tradition and participation. Those visiting Brandizzo during the carnival period will find a free, family-friendly, and genuine event, perfect for discovering the folklore of the Chivassese area and the warm hospitality of its people.
