The market exhibition of rare plants and botanical rarities in the ancient village of Telarolo
In the heart of the hills overlooking Castellarano, in the province of Reggio Emilia, the Borgo Antico Le Viole in Telarolo transforms for a weekend into a large, widespread garden. Borgo Plantarum is a market exhibition dedicated to quality nursery gardening and plant biodiversity, capable of attracting collectors, landscapers, and the simply curious in an architectural and landscape setting of rare beauty. The ancient village, with its courtyards, historic rooms, and green spaces, offers an ideal backdrop for discovering plants that are rarely found in commercial nurseries.
The heart of the event are the thirty nurseries and the approximately sixty exhibitors selected for the excellence of their production and the uniqueness of the species offered. They range from old and modern roses to collector's orchids, from Mediterranean citrus fruits to rare shrubs, from carnivorous plants to species suitable for arid climates. Among the participating nurseries are Italian and European realities such as Rifnik Garden & Plants and the French Le Pรฉpiniรจre de Vaugines by Gerard Weiner, specializing in dry-climate plants. Alongside the plants, there are also garden furniture, artisanal objects, and typical local products such as honey and medicinal herbs.
Borgo Plantarum is not just a market: it is a journey of knowledge. The program includes creative workshops, conferences held by experts, guided walks, and activities designed for children. Topics include the cultivation of citrus fruits, dry gardens suitable for the climate of the Po Valley, plant biodiversity, and hardy species, while workshops range from creating paper flowers to composing terrariums, from natural printing on fabric to working with clay.
Conceived by plant geneticist Luca Braglia and garden designer Carlo Contesso, the event combines botanical rigor with the pleasure of discovery. Activities for children, walks for recognizing bird songs, and artistic installations make Borgo Plantarum an event suitable for all ages, in the name of biodiversity and respect for nature. An unmissable stop on the green calendar of Emilia-Romagna.
The 2026 edition, the thirteenth of the event, was held on April 25th and 26th at the Borgo Antico Le Viole in Telarolo, bringing together thirty nurseries and about sixty exhibitors from all over Europe. The theme of the edition intertwined biodiversity, tradition, and ancient knowledge as a response to climate challenges, with a particular focus on hardy species and plants suitable for dry gardens.
The program offered creative workshops, conferences with experts, activities for children, and walks for recognizing bird songs. The entrance ticket was 7 euros, with free admission for children under 12.
