The widespread festival of small Sicilian towns arrives in Chiusa Sclafani
Borghi dei Tesori Fest is the branch dedicated to small towns of the broader Le Vie dei Tesori project, the largest widespread cultural event in Southern Italy. Promoted by the Le Vie dei Tesori Foundation together with the Borghi dei Tesori association, the festival opens the doors of dozens of small, often lesser-known Sicilian towns for three weekends in May, guiding visitors to discover churches, palaces, monasteries, oratories, and places usually closed to the public.
Among the featured villages is Chiusa Sclafani, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo nestled in the hinterland of the Sicani Mountains, in Sicily. It is a town with a discreet charm, made of narrow alleys, stairways, Baroque churches, and a history linked to the Olivetan monks and families forced to emigrate. During the festival, the village tells its story through its lesser-known treasures and its gastronomic tradition, from the famous ricotta to typical Sicani products.
For the 2026 edition, Chiusa Sclafani presents Il filo dei miracoli, a theatrical and narrative itinerary that transforms the historic center into a widespread stage. The route winds between the Church of Sant'Antonio, a late Baroque jewel reopened after years of closure, and the Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, a true 15th-century treasure chest. The performance stages a mysterious dialogue between a woman and a small Crucifix of Miracles: a tale of popular faith that weaves together visits, storytelling, and community theater.
The Chiusa Sclafani itinerary is ideally linked to those of the neighboring towns of Bisacquino and Giuliana, which on the same day build a single widespread show around the theme of miracles. This is the essence of the festival: not a single event, but a network of towns that rediscover and tell their own stories, enhancing the historical, artistic, and intangible heritage of the Sicilian hinterland.
Visits and experiences are accessible via coupons that can be purchased online on the Le Vie dei Tesori platform or at the info-points set up in each village. The most popular formulas include coupons for 18 euros for 10 visits or 10 euros for 4 visits, valid for all participating towns. Young local guides accompany visitors, giving the towns a precious cultural prominence.
The sixth edition of the Borghi dei Tesori Fest took place over three weekends in May 2026 (9-10, 16-17, and 23-24), involving dozens of small Sicilian towns. Chiusa Sclafani enlivened the final weekend, Sunday, May 24, with the theatrical itinerary Il filo dei miracoli.
From 10 am to 4 pm, the village offered a scenic route between the Church of Sant'Antonio and the 15th-century Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, staging the dialogue between a woman and the small Crucifix of Miracles. Together with Bisacquino and Giuliana, Chiusa Sclafani contributed to a single widespread show on the theme of miracles.
Chiusa Sclafani can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Palermo exit) and then via the SS118 and the internal roads of the Sicani Mountains; alternatively, from the A29 towards Sciacca. The village is about 80 km from Palermo. A car is recommended as public transport connections are limited.
Access to visits is via Le Vie dei Tesori coupons: 18 euros for 10 visits or 10 euros for 4 visits, available online at leviedeitesori.com or at the village info-points.
Wear comfortable shoes for the uphill paths in the historic center; take advantage of the stop to taste the ricotta and typical local products.
