The gastronomic festival in the Bala district of Burgio, in the heart of the Agrigento hinterland
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Boiled Sheep Festival takes place in Burgio, a small town in the Province of Agrigento, Sicily, nestled in the hinterland among the Sicani Mountains. The village is famous for its ancient ceramic tradition and artistic nativity scenes, but at this festival, the focus is on the table: boiled sheep, a humble dish that defines local peasant and pastoral cuisine, symbolizing a land where sheep farming has shaped community life for centuries.
The event brings the Bala district to life, one of Burgio's historic quarters, transformed for the occasion into an open-air space for conviviality. Amidst long tables, the aromas of broth and boiled meat, local wine, and chatter among neighbors, the festival recreates the authentic atmosphere of Sicilian village feasts, where food becomes an occasion for meeting and collective memory.
Boiled sheep is a recipe typical of the agro-pastoral culture of the Sicani Mountains: the meat, slow-cooked in water with herbs and aromatics, expresses all the savoriness of the hinterland's peasant cooking. The festival was born with the intent to enhance this culinary heritage and turn it into a defining event for Burgio, restoring dignity and visibility to a dish that risked disappearing from tables.
The first edition, originally scheduled for August 22, 2025, was postponed by the municipal administration following an appeal by Pope Leo XIV to observe that date as a day of fasting and prayer for peace. The event was subsequently held in September. The initiative also sparked protests from the LAV (Anti-Vivisection League), Sciacca branch, which requested its transformation into a plant-based festival. Despite the controversy, the festival took place, drawing the community into the Bala district.
At the moment, there are no official dates for the 2026 edition of the Boiled Sheep Festival in Burgio. The first edition took place in September 2025 in the Bala district; for any potential new edition, it is recommended to follow the updates from the Coltiviamo le Idee association.
Burgio is located in the hinterland of the Province of Agrigento, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached from Agrigento or Sciacca along the provincial roads of the hinterland. The festival takes place in the Bala district, in the town center.
The first edition was held in September 2025 in the evening. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official: it is recommended to follow the social media channels of the Coltiviamo le Idee association for updates.
As this is a neighborhood festival, entry is generally free, with dishes available for purchase at the stands. We recommend combining your visit with a tour of the village, which is known for its artistic ceramics.
