Enchanted Christmas in the blue village of Casamassima
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Blue Christmas – Christmas in the Blue Village is the grand Christmas event that, every year between December and Epiphany, wraps the historic center of Casamassima, in the Province of Bari, in festive magic. The event's name pays homage to the town's nickname: Casamassima is known throughout Puglia as the "Blue Village" due to its old town houses painted in shades of blue—a color rooted in an ancient vow to the Madonna of Constantinople, invoked in the 17th century against the plague that devastated the Bari territory.
For an entire month, the narrow streets and alleys of the historic center light up with artistic illuminations and themed decorations, while a giant Christmas tree glows in Piazza Aldo Moro. The village comes alive with artisan and food markets, stalls featuring local specialties, street performances, children's entertainment with mascots and stilt walkers, nativity scene exhibitions, and concerts. Each edition revolves around a different theme that inspires the displays and lighting.
The heart of local tradition is the Night of Saint Lucy on December 13th: in the dead of night, a torchlight procession sets off at dawn toward local places of worship, followed by religious celebrations, traditional tastings, and, in the evening, concerts and a pyromusical show that illuminates the village sky. It is one of the most deeply felt and well-attended moments for the Casamassima community.
Among the most evocative appointments is the Living Nativity, set up in the streets of the historic center by the Santa Croce Parish, which recreates the trades and scenes of the Nativity within the walls of the blue village. The event concludes on January 6th with the arrival of the Befana, sweets for the little ones, and the atmosphere of Epiphany.
Blue Christmas is promoted by the Municipality of Casamassima together with the Pro Loco, local schools, regional associations (including the Cartapestai, MASCI, and AGESCI), and local businesses. Admission to the events is free: the festival is designed to let families, children, and visitors experience Christmas while celebrating the identity and heritage of Puglia's most famous blue village.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of Blue Christmas – Christmas in the Blue Village have not yet been released. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place throughout December, starting with the inauguration and the lighting of the tree and illuminations, and continuing until January 6th. This page will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Casamassima publishes the official calendar.
Casamassima is located about 20 km south of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS100 Bari-Taranto road (Casamassima exit). By train, the station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est on the Bari-Putignano line; from the station, the historic center is within walking distance. The reference airport is Bari-Palese (Karol Wojtyła), about 30 km away.
Events animate the Borgo Antico (historic center), Piazza Aldo Moro, and the surrounding streets. The Living Nativity is held in the alleys of the blue village.
Events are free. For the updated program and schedules, we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Casamassima and the Pro Loco.
