The blessing of tractors and horses in the heart of the Canavese region
In Pavone Canavese, a small town in the province of Turin overlooking the Canavese landscape, the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot is much more than a religious observance: it is a moment when the entire rural community gathers to honor the patron saint of farmers and animals. The Blessing of Saint Anthony the Abbot with agricultural machinery and horses renews an ancient rite that, in the heart of winter, sees tractors, work vehicles, and horses parade to receive a propitiatory blessing.
Saint Anthony the Abbot, traditionally celebrated on January 17th, has been revered for centuries as the patron of livestock breeders, farmers, and domestic animals. In the countryside of Piedmont, where oxen, horses, and cattle were once essential work tools and a source of livelihood, farmers would gather to invoke his protection. Today, that tradition survives in Pavone Canavese with the blessing of tractors and agricultural machinery—which have replaced the draft animals of the past—and horses, which remain a living symbol of that deep bond between man and the land.
The event begins with a gathering in Piazza Falcone (the historic Market Square), where farmers and horse owners register their vehicles. This is followed by Holy Mass in the Parish Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, the spiritual heart of the town, followed by the actual blessing and the evocative parade of tractors and riders through the historic center of Pavone Canavese. To close the morning, a convivial lunch at an agriturismo brings together participants and curious onlookers in a festive atmosphere.
More than just a spectacle, the blessing of Saint Anthony the Abbot is an authentic village festival, organized by the Municipality of Pavone Canavese with the support of the parish priest and local volunteers. It is an opportunity to rediscover the value of agricultural work and the rural identity of the Canavese, a territory where the countryside and its traditions remain a living part of daily life. Admission to all parts of the ceremony is free.
Admission and participation in the ceremony were free. Lunch required a mandatory reservation by January 28th. The event was organized by the Municipality of Pavone Canavese.
The event is traditionally held in the second half of January or early February, on a Sunday morning, coinciding with the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot (January 17th).
