The ANA Acqui Terme Section gathering hosted by the Bistagno Alpini Group
The Alpini Sectional Gathering is the annual event that brings together the 'black feathers' of the ANA Acqui Terme Section, named after Lieutenant Colonel Luigi Pettinati. Each year, the gathering is hosted by a different local group: in 2026, the honor falls to the Bistagno Alpini Group, a small town in the province of Alessandria situated at the confluence of the two Bormida rivers in the heart of Piedmont. Bistagno previously hosted the 8th edition of the gathering in 2013, leaving a very positive impression on all participants.
The event blends moments of reflection and celebration with opportunities for festivity and conviviality open to everyone. The program kicks off with an evening concert by the sectional choir and culminates on Sunday with the assembly of banners and pennants, a parade through the town center accompanied by the ANA Fanfare of Acqui Terme, the flag-raising, the tribute to the fallen, Holy Mass, and the traditional Alpini lunch.
The heart of the Bistagno edition is the official naming of the Bistagno Alpini Group after Lieutenant Virginio Penengo, a figure remembered for his exemplary character and commitment to community volunteering. It is a solemn moment that binds the Group's identity to the memory of those who served the country and the local area.
The gathering is much more than a re-enactment: it is a living testament to the Alpini values of solidarity, service, and attachment to the mountains and local roots. The Alpini breakfast in the square, the choirs, the parade, and the final lunch make these days a deeply felt event not only for ANA members but for the entire citizenry of Bistagno and the neighboring towns of the Bormida Valley.
Organized by the Bistagno Alpini Group in collaboration with the Municipality of Bistagno, the Pro Loco, and the Mutual Aid Society (SMS), the gathering showcases the village and its traditions, attracting 'black feathers' and visitors from across the province of Alessandria and southern Piedmont. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Monferrato and the Bormida Valley, amidst history, hospitality, and community spirit.
Bistagno is located in the province of Alessandria, along the Bormida Valley. By car, it can be reached via the SS30 Bormida Valley road; the nearest motorway exit is on the A26 (Predosa exit) or via Acqui Terme. By train, the Bistagno station is on the Alessandria-Acqui Terme-Savona line.
Events take place in the historic center of Bistagno: evening concert at the SMS Hall, assembly in Piazza del Pallone, parade and ceremonies between Largo San Giovanni Battista and the Parish Church, and lunch at the Gipsoteca.
The evening concert is free to attend. Ceremonies are open to the public; the Alpini lunch requires reservation through the Alpini Group.
