Five days of music, Bavarian folklore, and Kühbacher beer at the foot of Monte Rosa
Every summer, the Weissmatten square in Gressoney-Saint-Jean transforms into the grand tent of an authentic Bavarian-style beer festival. The Bierfest is one of the most beloved food and wine events in the Aosta Valley: a large pavilion, long tables, German and Tyrolean folk music, costumed folklore groups, and beer galore.
The heart of the festival is Kühbacher beer, brewed by Baron Beck Peccoz's brewery, a family originally from Gressoney. A large barrel of approximately 15,000 liters, arriving from Kühbach, is tapped on opening day, a symbolic moment that kicks off the festivities. The beer, also available in a gluten-free version, accompanies a self-service menu of Bavarian and Aosta Valley specialties: beer-roasted chicken, ribs, Bratwurst, and other delicacies.
The Bierfest is rooted in the Walser identity of Gressoney, a community of Germanic origin settled in the upper Lys Valley. The event, organized by the Gressoney Folklore Group, features live music every evening and dancing with orchestras and bands from the Alpine folk scene, as well as folklore shows with groups in traditional costume, such as the Greschoney Trachtengruppe.
In the Municipality of Gressoney-Saint-Jean, in the heart of the Monte Rosa area, the Bierfest has become one of the flagship summer events of the Aosta Valley Region, successfully blending Central European brewing tradition with mountain hospitality.
The Bierfest 2026 enlivens the Weissmatten square in Gressoney-Saint-Jean from Wednesday, June 24th to Sunday, June 28th. Five days of celebration with Kühbacher beer from Baron Beck Peccoz, a self-service menu of Bavarian and Aosta Valley specialties, dancing evenings, and folklore shows. The evening live music program is determined by the Gressoney Folklore Group in the weeks preceding the event.
On the weekend (June 27-28), the Weissmatten chairlift is also in operation. The detailed program of bands and orchestras will be announced by the Gressoney Folklore Group closer to the event.
Gressoney-Saint-Jean can be reached by car from the A5 Turin-Aosta highway, exit Pont-Saint-Martin, then take the SR44 of the Lys Valley. By train to Pont-Saint-Martin, then a local bus to Gressoney.
Free admission to the pavilion. Food and drinks are paid. A free evening shuttle service is provided on the central days of the festival.
