Float parades and tradition in the heart of the Valdera
The Bientina Carnival is one of the most beloved folk events in the municipality of Bientina, located in the province of Pisa, in eastern Tuscany, just a stone's throw from the Valdera area and the Padule di Fucecchio marshlands. Every winter, the village transforms into an open-air stage featuring majestic allegorical floats, masked groups, and marching bands, creating a festive atmosphere that draws visitors from across the region.
The event traces its roots back to the Grape Festivals of 1937 and 1938, when the first floats paraded through the streets of Bientina to great acclaim. That enthusiasm led to the birth of the official Carnival in 1939, followed by the 1940 edition. The outbreak of World War II interrupted this young tradition, which was only revived with great vigor in 1988, thanks to the dedication of local associations and citizens united under the Intesa Bientinese per il Carnevale, the organization that still manages the event today.
The heart of the festival lies in the allegorical float parades, crafted over the preceding months with expert artisanal skill: massive works that blend current events and satire with the classic elements of the Italian carnival. Traditional masks like Harlequin, Columbine, and the Tuscan Stenterello mingle with contemporary characters, while music and choreography accompany the procession through the streets and squares of the town center.
A symbolic icon of the festival is the Bientinaccio, a puppet that, in local tradition, embodies the spirit of the Carnival. The event concludes with the evocative burning of the Bientinaccio and a colorful fireworks display, symbolically marking the end of the festivities. The program also features a mask competition, with prizes for the most bizarre and original costumes, alongside moments dedicated to children with games, dancing, and entertainment.
The Bientina Carnival is a deeply popular and inclusive festival, capable of engaging families, young people, and the entire citizenry in a calendar packed with events and shows. The poster for the 2026 edition was designed by a student from the Bientina middle school, confirming the close bond between the event and the local area. Admission to all parades is free, in the true spirit of shared celebration that has animated the municipality of Bientina and Tuscany for decades.
The 2026 edition of the Bientina Carnival took place in Bientina from January 25 to February 17, 2026, featuring traditional allegorical float parades and numerous events for all ages.
Among the new features announced were a new allegorical float and a revamped Bientinaccio. The official poster for the edition was designed by a student from the Bientina middle school, highlighting the event's deep roots in the local area.
The parades were held in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II on the Sundays of January 25, February 1, 8, and 15, and on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with processions starting at 3:00 PM.
On the evening of Saturday, February 14, the "Mascherata con le stelle" (Masquerade with the Stars) took place, an event dedicated to masked groups and the competition for the most original costumes.
