The UISP cycling event for sustainable mobility through the streets of Erchie
Bicincittà is the major national cycling festival organized by UISP (Italian Union for Sport for All). Every year, on a Sunday in May, it takes place in dozens of Italian cities to advocate for more livable urban spaces, bike lanes, and safe, bike-friendly streets. The Municipality of Erchie, in the province of Brindisi, has been participating in this initiative for years with a highly anticipated event that turns the Salento town into a meeting point for families, cycling enthusiasts, and curious visitors.
The event has a clear goal: to promote sustainable mobility, urban culture, and environmental education, offering citizens a unique day dedicated to sport, healthy living, and respect for the environment. It is not a race, but a non-competitive collective bike ride where everyone sets their own pace. Participants ride together, without haste, to rediscover the streets of their town and the surrounding countryside.
The route, which covers a few kilometers and is suitable even for children, winds through the streets of Erchie and the rural landscapes surrounding the town, featuring the dry-stone walls, masserie (farmhouses), and olive groves typical of the Brindisi Salento. Each edition features a theme that guides participants through evocative corners of the territory, highlighting the history and local traditions of this part of Puglia.
Bicincittà in Erchie is designed to be accessible to everyone: all you need is a bicycle, a desire to spend time together, and a small participation fee that includes insurance. Medical assistance is provided along the route, and a convivial refreshment break awaits participants at the end of the ride. It is the perfect opportunity for a family Sunday in the open air, dedicated to movement and rediscovering one's own territory.
The event is organized by UISP in collaboration with ASD MTB Bikers Erchie and is sponsored by the Municipality of Erchie, in the province of Brindisi. Registration is open in the days leading up to the event and on the morning of the ride directly at the meeting point.
The 2026 edition of Bicincittà in Erchie took place on Sunday, May 17, under the theme "Between Mysteries and Legends." The meeting point was set at 8:00 AM in Piazza Umberto I, with departure at 8:30 AM and an expected return around 12:00 PM.
The route, covering approximately 12 kilometers, led cyclists on an evocative visit to the Masseria Tre Torri, located just outside the town—a place steeped in local stories and legends that inspired the theme of this edition. The participation fee of 3 euros included insurance. An ambulance followed the group throughout the event, and participants were welcomed with a final refreshment at the end.
