Sunrise music and art within the archaeological sites of Central Sicily, with a stop in Mazzarino
The Between Music & Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary event featuring concerts, dance performances, art exhibitions, film screenings, and talks within the archaeological sites and historic landmarks of Central Sicily. The festival is itinerant, involving various municipalities across the provinces of Enna and Caltanissetta โ Piazza Armerina, Aidone, and Mazzarino โ and connecting extraordinary locations such as the UNESCO-listed Villa Romana del Casale, the Morgantina archaeological area, and the Sofiana site.
Mazzarino, a town in the Province of Caltanissetta, Sicily, hosts the festival in the evocative Sofiana archaeological area, the ancient Philosophiana, a former staging post along the road connecting Catania to Agrigento and now a site of great archaeological fascination. It is here that the Between Festival presents one of its most emotional moments: the sunrise concert, where live music accompanies the dawn among the ruins. An intimate and ritualistic experience that blends landscape, archaeology, and contemporary art.
Conceived by Roberto Grossi, the Between Festival was born with the aim of turning Sicily's ancient archaeological sites into living laboratories for contemporary creation. Each edition revolves around a theme that runs through the entire program, placing the Mediterranean at the center as a space for dialogue, encounter, and creativity. Alongside the performances, the festival offers international artistic production campuses, archaeology summer schools, and workshops involving young talents from European and North African countries.
The programming ranges from jazz to singer-songwriter music, from contemporary dance to installations and photography exhibitions, and even cinema. Over the years, the festival has hosted prominent Italian and international artists, with a special focus on cross-cultural exchange and languages that transcend borders. The artistic direction is entrusted to Stefano Mastruzzi and Roberto Grossi.
All events at the Between Music & Arts Festival are free of charge, in line with the festival's mission to bring culture to local territories and connect the public with Sicily's archaeological heritage. For those visiting Mazzarino, it is the perfect opportunity to discover the Sofiana area in an unusual light, amidst sunrise music and cross-cultural dialogue.
The 5th edition of the Between Music & Arts Festival is held from July 1st to 5th, 2026, under the artistic direction of Stefano Mastruzzi and Roberto Grossi. The theme "Confini-Insieme" runs through the entire program, placing the Mediterranean at the center as a space for dialogue, creativity, and cross-cultural encounter. The festival is produced by the Archaeological Park of Morgantina and the Villa Romana del Casale in partnership with Globart ETS and the Saint Louis College of Music.
The Mazzarino event is scheduled for July 3rd in the Sofiana archaeological area, where the festival presents an evocative sunrise musical event at the first light of dawn, performed by young musicians from the Campus Musica coordinated by the Saint Louis College of Music.
The Mazzarino event takes place in the Sofiana archaeological area (the ancient Philosophiana), in the Province of Caltanissetta. Other festival events are held in Piazza Armerina (Villa Romana del Casale, Palazzo Trigona, the former convent of Sant'Anna, Piazza Duomo) and Aidone (Archaeological Museum).
Mazzarino can be reached by car via the SS117bis and the provincial roads connecting Central Sicily; the Sofiana area is located in the countryside between Mazzarino and Piazza Armerina. From the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, take the exit for Enna or Caltanissetta. The nearest train stations are in Enna and Caltanissetta.
Free admission to all events.
The sunrise concert requires arriving well in advance during the early morning hours: comfortable clothing and a flashlight are recommended. It is well worth combining your visit with the Sofiana archaeological area and the nearby Villa Romana del Casale.
