Two days of Epiphany celebrations in the heart of the Garfagnana, featuring the Befana descending from the Duomo bell tower.
In the heart of the Garfagnana, in the town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (Province of Lucca, Tuscany), the arrival of the Epiphany turns into a local festival that draws families and visitors from across the valley. The highlight is the Befana Flight: the charming old ladyโugly and ragged, yet generous and kind as tradition dictatesโslowly descends from the top of the Duomo bell tower, suspended above the historic center, while crowds of adults and children look on in wonder.
The Befana's descent is carefully and safely managed by volunteers from the Tuscan Alpine and Speleological Rescue (Lucca station). The event is organized by the Compagnia dell'Ariosto in collaboration with local associations and the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. It is an appointment deeply rooted in the valley's folk culture, where the Epiphany has always been marked by the famous befanate: groups of costumed carolers who, on the evening of January 5th, go from house to house singing well-wishing verses or satirical stanzas for those who do not welcome them.
The festival spans two days, January 5th and 6th. It begins with the flight from the bell tower, the heart of the event, followed by family games in Piazza Olinto Dini and Befana Carols sung through the historic center by musicians from the Filarmonica Verdi, involving citizens and visitors in a festive procession through the village alleys.
Throughout the festival, the Befana's cottage is set up, while local shops remain open for the winter sales. There is no shortage of hot chocolate, mulled wine, and sweets offered to warm the atmosphere, with the valuable contribution of the Autieri della Garfagnana for refreshments. It is the perfect occasion to joyfully close the holiday season and discover one of the most characteristic villages in the Lucca mountains.
