Four concerts leading up to the Beethoven bicentenary, featuring young talents from the Academy
The Beethoven Festival is a concert series presented by the Pinerolo and Turin Academy of Music Foundation, dedicated to the genius of Bonn and held in the historic hall on Viale Giolitti, in the center of Pinerolo, near Turin. Part of the "In Crescendo" project and linked to the "Ascolti" concert season, the festival consists of four Tuesday evening events tracing the stylistic evolution of Ludwig van Beethoven, from his early Viennese experiments to the enigmatic masterpieces of his final period.
At the heart of the festival are the young talents from the Academy's advanced courses—musicians already embarking on their professional careers who study under world-class mentors such as Emanuele Arciuli, Gabriele Carcano, Pietro De Maria, Patrick Demenga, Filippo Gamba, Lukas Hagen, Enrico Pace, Roberto Plano, the Trio di Parma, and Mariangela Vacatello. Each evening is designed as a listening journey: from piano sonatas to chamber music for violin and cello, culminating in the monumental Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 37.
One of the most fascinating highlights is the debut of the CAdMO – Computer Aided Digital Music Orchestra, an adaptive virtual orchestra that enables real-time dialogue between the soloist and a digital orchestral accompaniment. Thanks to this technology, young pianists can tackle the concerto repertoire even in a chamber music setting, creating an original encounter between classical heritage and contemporary research.
The festival is not an isolated event; it represents the first step of a multi-year journey leading to the bicentenary of Beethoven's death in 2027. The series concludes with a special tribute to the memory of Maurizio Pollini, connecting Beethoven's late style with the Viennese avant-garde of Schönberg and Webern, in an ideal dialogue between the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
For decades, the Pinerolo Academy of Music has been a benchmark for excellence in musical education in Piedmont. With the Beethoven Festival, the town of Pinerolo reaffirms its status as a hub of high musical culture, attracting enthusiasts from across the region and offering the public world-class concerts at accessible prices.
Four evenings, each dedicated to a creative season of Beethoven, brought the Viale Giolitti hall in Pinerolo to life.
Early Viennese works: Sonata Op. 2 No. 1, the 32 Variations in C minor WoO 80, Cello Sonata Op. 5 No. 2, and Violin Sonata Op. 12 No. 1. Featuring Sveva Botrugno, Paolo Tomasini, Andrea Boella, and Michele Chinellato, with mentors Gabriele Carcano, Patrick Demenga, and Cecilia Ziano.
An evening of innovation with the debut of the CAdMO – Digi Orchestra conducted by Marco Robino: Sonata Op. 30 No. 3, Trio Op. 70 No. 1 "Ghost," and Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 37 with digital orchestra. Performers included Leonardo Priori, Giulio Mandrile, and the Trio Mantegna.
The concertante style of maturity: the famous "Kreutzer" Sonata Op. 47, Sonata Op. 101, and Cello Sonata Op. 102 No. 1, with Janine Bratu, Eugenio Catale, and the Academy's pianists.
Late Beethoven compared with the Viennese avant-garde: Bagatelles Op. 126, Sonata Op. 109, alongside Schönberg's Six Little Piano Pieces Op. 19 and Webern's Variations Op. 27, in memory of Maurizio Pollini.
