An afternoon dedicated to bees and beekeeping on the scenic viewpoint of Serrara Fontana, Ischia Island
Every spring, the Serrara viewpointโa small, balcony-like square overlooking the southern side of the island of Ischiaโtransforms for an afternoon into an open-air laboratory dedicated to bees. The Bee Festival is a young event that has already become a staple in the spring calendar of the Municipality of Serrara Fontana, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania.
The goal set by the organizers is both simple and ambitious: to raise awareness, engage the public, and celebrate the invaluable worth of these insects, which are increasingly threatened yet essential for the balance of ecosystems and agriculture. On an island where citrus groves, vineyards, and Mediterranean scrub coexist within a few square kilometers, this theme is far from abstract; it directly concerns the landscape, local production, and the quality of life for its residents.
The heart of the day is a direct encounter with the world of beekeeping. The event space hosts educational hives, stations dedicated to nectar-producing plants, and honey tastings led by local beekeepers who explain the hive cycle, the work of foraging bees, and the honey extraction process to the public. Alongside the hives, there are stalls featuring local crafts and small-scale producers.
The Bee Festival is not a conference for industry experts: the approach is educational and intentionally lighthearted, with hands-on activities for children, shows, and music accompanying the exhibits. It is the kind of event you can enjoy in just a few hours, perhaps combining it with a walk toward Sant'Angelo or along the trails leading up to Monte Epomeo.
The location on the viewpoint adds much to the experience: from the square, the view stretches over neighboring towns and, on particularly clear days, reaches as far as the island of Ventotene. Few events manage to combine environmental content and panoramic views so effectively.
During the 2025 edition, the Municipality of Serrara Fontana officially received the "Bee-Friendly Municipality" recognition, a title linked to an initiative promoted by the Pro Loco of Ischia and Procida to encourage local authorities to actively participate in environmental and territorial protection, recognizing the role bees and beekeeping play in biodiversity, food security, and sustainable local development. It is a detail that speaks volumes about the spirit of the festival: not just a showcase, but a commitment that the administration has put in writing.
The Bee Festival is organized by the Pro Loco Serrara Fontana together with the "A Voce d'รฉ Criature" Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Serrara Fontana d'Ischia. Local beekeepers and agricultural companies collaborate on the event, managing the educational aspects and tastings. The charitable component is a recurring feature of the festival, which combines environmental awareness with a focus on childhood and local community associations.
Serrara Fontana is the highest municipality on the island of Ischia: its territory includes the hamlets of Serrara, Fontana, Ciglio, Succhivo, part of Panza, and the fishing village of Sant'Angelo. The name Serrara itself refers to a "mountainous" landscape, and the local parish dates back to 1641. Here, the island changes its face compared to the thermal resorts of the northern coast: terraces, vineyards, trails, and small inhabited clusters reveal an agricultural and more intimate side of Ischia, which the Bee Festival brings to the forefront.
The event is traditionally held in the second half of May, close to World Bee Day, for a few hours in the afternoon. The 2025 edition took place on Thursday, May 22, at the Serrara Viewpoint, while the 2026 edition was scheduled for Sunday, May 24, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at the Serrara Square and viewpoint.
The Bee Festival 2026 took place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at the Serrara Square and viewpoint (Piazza Pietro Paolo Iacono, 5), in the Municipality of Serrara Fontana, on the island of Ischia.
Now in its fourth edition, the event confirmed its educational vocation: to raise public awareness, involve both adults and children, and celebrate the invaluable worth of bees, the silent protagonists of the island's biodiversity. The choice of the viewpoint as a venue was not accidental, as it combines the environmental theme with one of the most open panoramas on the southern side of Ischia.
The edition was documented by local island media, which dedicated reports and video footage to it after the event. However, a detailed hour-by-hour program was not released online: those wishing for information on individual activities can contact the Pro Loco Serrara Fontana.
Serrara Fontana can be reached from Ischia by sea: ferries and hydrofoils connect the island with Naples (Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa) and Pozzuoli. From the ports of Ischia and Forio, continue by local bus heading up toward Serrara, Fontana, and Sant'Angelo. By car or scooter, the road is scenic but narrow and winding: on festival days, it is advisable to arrive early, as parking spaces around the viewpoint square are limited.
The festival takes place in the afternoon, generally from 3:00 PMโ4:00 PM until evening, in the public spaces of the square and the viewpoint. Local sources do not report entrance fees; tastings and purchases at the artisan market are, of course, separate.
There is a wide range of accommodation options across the island: Sant'Angelo and Panza are the closest bases, while Forio, Ischia Porto, and Barano offer a broader selection of hotels, B&Bs, and vacation rentals.
