The international short film festival that brings food cinema to Rionero in Vulture
The Basilicata International Film Festival, known as BIFF, is an international festival dedicated to short films that has found its new home in Rionero in Vulture, in the province of Potenza. An event that brings hundreds of works from over thirty countries to the heart of Basilicata, with an international jury and the ambition to make the small Lucanian village a crossroads for independent cinema.
The distinctive feature of BIFF is the link between cinema and food: it is indeed the first festival in the world to award short films on food themes, enhancing the cinematic storytelling of food as culture, identity, and sustainability. Each edition chooses a guiding theme that runs through screenings and debates, in continuous dialogue between art, territory, and current events.
Alongside the competition, the festival dedicates ample space to training: meetings with directors, actors, and authors, workshops, and laboratories aimed at high school students in Vulture and academies. The pulsating heart of the event is the Pasquale Sacco Social Centre, which for several days becomes a laboratory for cinema, cultural exchange, and growth for new generations.
BIFF has received important recognition, including the high patronage of the European Parliament and a memorandum of understanding with Giffoni Experience, an agreement granted only to a limited number of Italian cultural festivals. With free admission to all screenings, it is a precious opportunity to experience great short film cinema in an authentic setting like that of the Lucanian Vulture region.
The Basilicata International Film Festival returns to Rionero in Vulture from October 1 to 3, 2026, with the guiding theme 'Water'. The international formula for the short film competition is confirmed, with free admission to all screenings.
The detailed program will be announced in the coming weeks. Based on previous editions, the three days will include the screening of the international short films in competition, meetings with directors, actors, and authors, training workshops and labs for students from Vulture and academies, and awards ceremonies, with the 2026 theme dedicated to Water. The festival confirms its focus on food cinema, being the first in the world to award short films on food themes.
