Flying over the Lucanian Dolomites between Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa
In the heart of the Gallipoli Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Nature Park, in the province of Potenza, the Volo dell'Angelo ideally connects two twin villages suspended among the rocks: Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. It is one of the most exciting ziplines in Italy, a steel cable stretched across the void on which you slide, harnessed, reaching speeds that can touch 120 km/h.
The experience is divided into two special lines that connect the two towns: the San Martino line and the Peschiera line. Flying, your gaze embraces the famous sandstone spires of the Lucanian Dolomites, the roofs of the two villages, and the valleys of the Basento river, in a landscape that has made this corner of Basilicata famous worldwide.
Inaugurated in 2007, the Volo dell'Angelo has become in a few years the symbol of Lucanian experiential tourism, driving the rebirth of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, both included in the club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The initiative is managed in collaboration with the two Municipalities and has transformed an inland and little-known territory into a destination capable of attracting visitors from all over Europe.
Before launching, the wait at the ticket office and the fitting of the harness are already part of the ritual: the staff prepares participants, explaining each step. Then comes the moment of detachment, the silence broken by the hiss of the cable, and the sensation of soaring like a bird of prey over the rocks. An adrenaline-pumping thrill suitable for lovers of outdoor adventures, in one of the most evocative natural settings in Southern Italy.
The visit to the Volo dell'Angelo is completed by exploring the two villages: the steep alleys of Castelmezzano, the remains of the Norman-Swabian castle, the Path of the Seven Stones, and, in Pietrapertosa, the Saracen fortress and the Via Ferrata Marcirosa. All around, hiking trails and the flavors of Lucanian cuisine make this strip of the Potenza province a multi-day destination.
The 2026 season of the Volo dell'Angelo is open from May 1st to December 8th, with a varied schedule alternating weekdays and weekends.
