The Barano stop of the European Music Festival in Piazza San Rocco
Born in Paris in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique and spread across Europe following the 1997 Budapest Charter, the Music Festival celebrates the summer solstice by transforming every city into a vast, open-air stage where professionals and amateurs share the same public space. In Barano d'Ischia, in the province of Naples, this celebration takes the form of the «Cori e Voci» evening, bringing live music to the picturesque setting of Piazza San Rocco.
The common thread of the Barano event is the voice, expressed in its many forms: polyphonic choirs, youth ensembles, soloists, and local groups. The program offers a journey through different genres and repertoires, engaging audiences of all ages, from contemporary choral music to singer-songwriter tracks, and even traditional Neapolitan and Italian melodies.
Organization is handled by the Pro Loco Barano d'Ischia APS, which oversees artist selection and square setup each year. By prioritizing school choirs and local young talent, the evening becomes a true moment of community participation, in line with the original spirit of the Music Festival: an open, free, and barrier-free celebration.
Located on the southern side of the island of Ischia, Barano is one of the six municipalities of the 'Green Island' in the Gulf of Naples. With roots dating back to the 1300s and the famous Maronti beach, Barano blends nature, history, and folk traditions. The «Cori e Voci» evening is part of a broader summer calendar that enlivens the island during the tourist season, offering residents and visitors a chance to gather through music.
For the 2026 edition, the Barano d'Ischia Music Festival chose the choral evening format «Cori e Voci», hosted in Piazza San Rocco on Saturday, June 20, from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM. The event, promoted by the Pro Loco Barano d'Ischia APS, celebrated the universal value of music as a tool for meeting, sharing, and culture.
