Banderesi Festival

A medieval re-enactment in the heart of Abruzzo

The Banderesi Festival is the most iconic traditional event in Bucchianico, a hillside town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Celebrated in honor of Saint Urban I, the first pope and martyr and the village's historic patron saint, the festival has roots reaching back to the Middle Ages: documented sources place its origins between 1305 and 1335, making it one of the oldest re-enactments in the region.

The legend of the ciammaichella

The story passed down through generations tells of the victorious resistance of the Bucchianico people against the attempts at subjugation by the neighboring Teate (modern-day Chieti). According to tradition, Saint Urban himself appeared in a dream to the Sergentiere, the village's military commander, suggesting an ingenious stratagem: the 'ciammaichella' (literally 'little snail'). The soldiers, adorned with colorful feather plumes, ran back and forth along the walls of Bucchianico, making them appear to the enemy as an army much larger than it actually was. The deception succeeded and led to peace between the communities.

The Some di Sant'Urbano

The most poetic moment of the festival is the procession of the Some di Sant'Urbano, which takes place on the Sunday preceding the historical festival. Small groups set out from the surrounding districts to join a single, colorful procession composed of carts, men, children, and festively decorated animals, along with women carrying large baskets on their heads filled with local produce, decorated with hundreds of crepe paper flowers handmade throughout the year under the guidance of the Banderese. It serves as a reminder of when the rural inhabitants took refuge within the walls of Bucchianico to escape attacks.

The Banderesi parade

During the Historical Festival, three days of re-enactment bring the historic center to life with costumed processions, flag-wavers, drummers, and performers. Centered around the figures of the Banderese and the Castellana, along with their ladies-in-waiting, the event reconstructs the atmosphere of a medieval village, bridging devotion and collective memory. The event is held under the patronage of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture, recognitions that certify its authenticity as an intangible heritage of Abruzzo.

Traditions and flavors

The historical and religious dimensions are complemented by gastronomy: the festival is an opportunity to rediscover local products and traditional sweets, including the famous 'Cancellate' of Saint Urban, which are studied and promoted by the municipal administration. Evening musical performances and free concerts in the square complete the program, making the Banderesi Festival an event that unites the entire community of Bucchianico and attracts visitors from all over Abruzzo.
