Open-air theatre scattered across the courtyards and balconies of the Susa Valley
Balconate Liriche is an immersive theatre project that brings life to the town of Venaus, a small village in the Susa Valley in the province of Turin, in the heart of Piedmont. The concept is simple yet poetic: to turn residential courtyards, squares, and balconies into a grand open-air stage, where actors perform in the street and the audience watches from their windows or while sitting in communal areas. It is a form of theatre that enters the daily life of the village, breaking down the barriers between artists and spectators.
The festival was created by the Teatro a Canone company, based in Chivasso, under the direction of Luca Vonella and with executive production by Il Mutamento ETS. The immersive theatre format, designed to bring performances directly into communities, highlights everyday living spaces and democratizes access to culture, reaching even small towns often far from traditional circuits.
In Venaus, the season opened with the debut on June 7, 2026, when L'amore delle tre melarance transformed the Church Square into a magical stage. The calendar continues with further events:
The magic of Balconate Liriche does not stop in Venaus: the travelling festival also visits other municipalities in the valley, including Mompantero and Chianocco, along a route that winds through the villages of the Susa Valley.
Balconate Liriche is part of the Rizomi network, promoted by Il Mutamento together with ASD NAD – CompagniaNad, in synergy with local Pro Loco associations, Piedmontese municipalities, and with the support of the Fondazione CRT. The project restores centrality to public spaces and creates opportunities for encounter between artistic practice and the inhabitants, in an informal and familiar context that is the true strength of the experience.
Attending a Balconate Liriche performance means discovering a new and intimate way to experience theatre, immersed in the authentic atmosphere of an Alpine village in the Susa Valley. It is a perfect opportunity for those looking for a free cultural event that is accessible and deeply connected to the territory and its communities.
In Venaus, the 2026 edition of Balconate Liriche debuted on June 7 with L'amore delle tre melarance in the Church Square. The calendar continues with The Little Prince on July 7 and Monkey King and Tripitaka on July 14. The travelling festival, signed by Teatro a Canone and directed by Luca Vonella, also reaches other municipalities in the valley such as Mompantero and Chianocco. All events are free to attend.
The travelling festival also visits Mompantero (June 13) and Chianocco (June 27).
Venaus is located in the Susa Valley, in the province of Turin. By car, it can be reached via the A32 Turin–Bardonecchia motorway (Susa exit), continuing towards the valley floor. By train, the reference station is Susa, connected to Turin, from where you can continue by bus or car.
Balconate Liriche performances are free to attend. It is recommended to check the times and exact location of each event on the channels of the Teatro a Canone company and Il Mutamento ETS, as well as at the Venaus Pro Loco.
As these are outdoor performances in the village's courtyards and squares, comfortable clothing is recommended, as well as a light jacket for the evenings, given the Alpine altitude.
