The great Carnival party at Piazzale del Fosso
The Baccanale of Barga is the most anticipated Carnival event in the town of Barga, a stunning medieval village perched in the Media Valle del Serchio, in the province of Lucca and the heart of the Tuscan Garfagnana. Every year, the festival transforms Piazzale del Fosso, the space at the foot of the ancient castle, into a massive open-air arena dedicated to fun, costumes, and music that keeps going until the early hours.
The name evokes the Bacchanalia, the ancient Roman festivals in honor of Bacchus, the god of wine, the grape harvest, and intoxication. Much of the Italian Carnival tradition—the subversion of order, the wearing of masks, and collective celebration—descends from these Dionysian rites and the subsequent Saturnalia. In Barga, this spirit is revived in a modern and popular key, with an evening that blends revelry, costumes, and social connection.
The heart of the Baccanale is the costume contest, organized by the Youth Council, which awards the most original creations across several categories: best male costume, best female costume, best couple, and best group. The square fills with elaborate outfits and themed disguises, while the DJ set keeps the energy high under the large marquee with disco and dance music until late at night.
The Baccanale is promoted by the Municipality of Barga in collaboration with the Youth Council, the Pro Loco, and the Gatti Randagi association, which manages the drink stands. It is a festival deeply rooted in the community, capable of attracting many young people from all over the valley. In the days leading up to the event, the numerous bars in the ancient village of Barga also organize themed nights, extending the Carnival spirit throughout the historic center.
The 26th edition of the Baccanale of Barga was held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Piazzale del Fosso, after bad weather forced a postponement of the originally scheduled date. A crowd of costumed revelers, including many young people, brought the square to life until the early hours with music and fun.
The evening, organized by the Municipality of Barga in collaboration with the Youth Council, Giesse Barga, and the Gatti Randagi, featured the classic costume contest and a DJ set, confirming the Baccanale as the most popular Carnival event in the area.
In the days prior, numerous bars in the ancient castle of Barga organized themed pre-party nights for the Baccanale.
