Self-supported bikepacking between Saturnia and the Argentario, in the heart of the Maremma
Avventura Maremmana is one of the most anticipated cycle-tourism events in the Grosseto Maremma. Established in 2016, the event takes place in Saturnia, the famous thermal village in the Municipality of Manciano, in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany. This is not a timed competition, but a self-supported bikepacking gathering where each participant chooses their own pace, following a GPS track on a mountain bike, gravel bike, or e-bike.
The core of the event lies in two brand-new itineraries that lead cyclists from the inland hills to the sea of the Argentario each year:
Both tracks wind through strade bianche (white gravel roads), single tracks, cultivated hills, Mediterranean scrub, and ancient historic villages, offering a slow-paced journey through the most authentic landscapes of the Maremma.
The choice of Saturnia as the start and finish point is no coincidence: the village, world-famous for its Cascate del Mulino thermal waterfalls, serves as an ideal gateway to a region rich in thermal baths, Etruscan necropolises, 'vie cave' (sunken roads), and medieval villages like Manciano, Montemerano, and Pitigliano. The initiative is supported by the Municipality of Manciano and is part of a strategy to promote slow and sustainable tourism.
Avventura Maremmana does not reward the fastest; it rewards those who know how to enjoy the journey. It is an invitation to rediscover the pleasure of exploring by bike, away from traffic and beaten paths, immersed in the nature and traditions of one of the most fascinating areas of southern Tuscany.
The 2026 edition, the tenth of the event, confirmed the winning formula of self-supported bikepacking. With the start set for the early hours of Saturday, April 18, from Saturnia, a village in the Municipality of Manciano, cyclists tackled two completely renewed GPS tracks. The initiative, sponsored by the Municipality of Manciano with the support of Deputy Mayor Roberto Bulgarini and Tourism Councilor Andrea Caccialupi, reaffirmed its commitment to slow tourism and the exploration of the Maremma territory.
Non-competitive self-supported event: each participant follows the GPS track at their own pace, on a mountain bike, gravel bike, or e-bike, through white gravel roads, single tracks, hills, Mediterranean scrub, and historic Maremma villages.
The event takes place in Saturnia, a village in the Municipality of Manciano (GR), with the start and finish in the thermal town. The departure is scheduled for the early morning, around 8:00 AM.
By car: Saturnia can be reached via the SS74 Maremmana; it is about 55 km from Grosseto. By train: the nearest station is Albinia (Tyrrhenian line), then continue by car. Nearest airports: Rome Fiumicino and Pisa.
Participation is via online registration (dedicated form). For information: [email protected]. Mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and e-bikes are permitted.
As this is a self-supported event, it is essential to be self-sufficient: bring a repair kit, water supply, and a GPS device with the track loaded. Saturnia offers numerous accommodation options and the perfect opportunity for a rejuvenating thermal bath at the end of the day.
