Three days of allegorical floats, costumes, and music in the heart of Avetrana
Every year, between February and March, the center of Avetrana, a small town in the province of Taranto bordering the Salento region, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Avetrana Carnival is one of the most anticipated and cherished events for the local community: three days of parades featuring allegorical floats, costumed groups, music, and dance that animate the streets and squares, involving citizens of all ages in a shared celebration.
The true heart of the festival lies in the allegorical floats, handcrafted by local groups after weeks of hard work in the town's workshops and warehouses. This commitment, driven by passion and a spirit of volunteerism, represents the very soul of the event. The parades feature historic groups such as Li Sfaticati, Zenit, Gruppo Terapia, Problemi Seri, and Senza na lira, who compete with creativity, satire, and vibrant colors.
Beyond the floats, the Avetrana Carnival offers a rich entertainment program: DJ sets in the squares, performances by local dance schools, and live concerts that keep the evenings lively. Choreographies and music turn the parades into a true traveling party, where masks, confetti, and streamers provide the perfect backdrop for an event designed for families, children, and young people.
The Avetrana Carnival is deeply rooted in the popular culture of Salento and the province of Taranto, in Apulia. Carefreeness, creativity, and social connection are the values that drive the event, which renews the bond between the community and its traditions every year. Organized by the Avetrana municipal administration with the support of local sponsors and associations, the Carnival is now an identity-defining appointment that attracts visitors from neighboring towns.
From February 15 to 17, 2026, Avetrana experienced three days of color and creativity. Each day, the parades started in the early afternoon, arriving at Piazza Vittorio Veneto in the evening. Competing were five allegorical floats created by the groups Li Sfaticati, Zenit, Gruppo Terapia, Problemi Seri, and Senza na lira.
The parades were enriched by performances from the dance schools Gabe Sport Danza and Balla con Noi, along with live music and DJ sets in the squares. The event, organized by the municipal administration with the support of local sponsors, concluded with the award ceremony for the floats.
Avetrana is located in the province of Taranto, on the border with Salento. By car, it can be reached via the SS7 ter or the provincial roads connecting Manduria, Nardรฒ, and Sava. The nearest train station is Nardรฒ-Avetrana; the reference airports are Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
The parades wind through the historic center of Avetrana, finishing in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The starting points for the processions vary by day (different squares and plazas throughout the town).
Admission to the parades is free. We recommend arriving early, following the instructions of the Local Police and Civil Protection along the route, and bringing your own masks and costumes to fully experience the carnival atmosphere.
