An evening of traditional flavors and folk music in the Grotte of Carife, in Alta Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
When the first mists rise from the Ufita Valley and the woods turn shades of red, Carife lights up for its Autumn Festival. It is a young event, launched in 2024 by the Associazione Tourniquet with the support of the Municipality of Carife, yet it has quickly found its audience. Held over a single evening between late October and early November, it is dedicated to seasonal flavors and Southern Italian folk music.
The village, with just over 1,200 inhabitants perched at an altitude of 740 meters, belongs to that part of the Avellino province—the Baronia in Alta Irpinia—that rarely appears in tourist guides, and for this very reason, it preserves an intact fabric of daily life and traditions. The festival was born from this: not from an events office, but from a group of volunteers who decided to bring people back to the square during the season when, traditionally, people would gather around the fire.
The heart of the festival is the Grotte area, which opens up around Largo Campanile Antico in the oldest part of the village. These are excavated rooms and stone cellars that once served as storage for food and wine. Decorated with long tables, lanterns, and stalls, they become a collective, partially open-air dining room for the night. The organizers have chosen a 'tasting trail' format: you walk, stop at a station, sample the food, and move on.
The gastronomic offering is simple and hearty, reflecting the peasant cuisine of the Baronia. In the first edition, the tasting trail included dishes that perfectly capture the season:
The menu changes from year to year based on product availability and the volunteers' choices, but the common thread remains the same: chestnuts, mushrooms, pumpkin, local cheeses, and regional olive oil.
The second soul of the festival is music. The 2024 inaugural evening was enlivened by the group Tarant Folk, who, starting at 9:30 PM, performed Gargano-style melodies for dancing: tarantellas, pizzicas, and traditional Southern repertoire, with the crowd joining in circles between the tables. It is a choice consistent with the festival's identity, which looks to the oral and instrumental traditions of the Campanian and Apulian Apennines rather than generic square-event formulas.
Those arriving early can spend the afternoon exploring the village. Carife preserves the Church of San Giovanni Battista, rebuilt in the 18th century after the 1732 earthquake, and the Palazzo Marchesale. Above all, the municipal territory holds important Samnite necropolises and prehistoric findings, housed in the local archaeological museum, which the Associazione Tourniquet has frequently supported with exhibitions and cultural initiatives. The view over the Ufita Valley from the highest point of the village is worth the trip alone.
The Autumn Festival is part of the dense calendar of Irpinian food festivals that accompany the harvest of chestnuts, mushrooms, and truffles between September and November, as cataloged annually by the Province of Avellino's 'Sistema Irpinia' portal. Compared to larger, more crowded events, the Carife festival maintains an intimate, family-like atmosphere: a few hundred people, all within easy reach for conversation, and no endless queues. It is the kind of party where you end up chatting with the people cooking the food.
As of the writing of this page, the Associazione Tourniquet has not yet announced the date for the third edition of the Autumn Festival in Carife, nor has the Municipality published any announcements in its event calendar. Therefore, there is no official information regarding the program, menu, or musical guests for 2026.
The reference remains that of previous editions: a single evening, held between the last days of October and the beginning of November, starting around 7:00 PM in the Grotte of Largo Campanile Antico, with live folk music in the second part of the evening. As this is an event organized by local volunteers, announcements typically arrive a few weeks in advance via the association's social media channels.
We will update this page as soon as the 2026 date is announced.
Carife is located in Alta Irpinia, in the Baronia area, about 60 km from Avellino. By car: take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Grottaminarda, then follow the SS90 delle Puglie towards Ariano Irpino and provincial roads towards Vallesaccarda and Carife; or take the Vallata-Bisaccia exit from the SS Ofantina. The reference train station is Ariano Irpino, connected to the town by limited bus services: a car remains the most practical solution.
The festival is held in the Grotte area, around Largo Campanile Antico, in the old part of the town center. The area has been marked as accessible to people with disabilities. Parking is available in the town's free spaces, just a few minutes' walk away.
The event has always taken place in the evening, starting around 7:00 PM with live music from 9:30 PM. Admission has been free; tastings are purchased on-site. Official information regarding the 2026 date, times, and any booking requirements has not yet been released.
Carife is at an altitude of 740 meters, and it gets cold in the evening in late October: a heavy jacket and comfortable shoes are essential, as the route is on cobblestones and sloping alleys. Those wishing to stay overnight can find accommodation in Ariano Irpino, Vallata, and the agritourisms of the Ufita Valley.
Updates are available on the Associazione Tourniquet Carife Facebook page and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino.
