About Christmas City

For a few days leading up to the holidays, the "Don Giuseppe Diana" Villa Comunale Amphitheater in Atripalda transforms into an open-air Christmas village. Stalls, lights, entertainment, and Christmas tales welcome families and children from 6:00 PM, while the entire Irpinian town lights up with a widespread program of concerts, meetings, and charity events. An authentic, free village Christmas designed for togetherness, just a stone's throw from Avellino.

A Christmas village in the heart of the city

Atripalda Christmas City is the event that, in the final days before Christmas Eve, turns the "Don Giuseppe Diana" Villa Comunale Amphitheater into a small festive village. Stalls, illuminations, and entertainment turn the city center into an open-air Christmas hamlet: it usually starts at 6:00 PM, when the winter darkness makes the lights suspended among the park's trees even more evocative. Admission is free, and the event is specifically designed for children and families from the town of Atripalda and the surrounding areas.

What to find in the village

The format is the now-recognizable one of a local Christmas market: stalls featuring crafts and small local productions, gift ideas, sweets and typical Irpinian products, food stands, and decorations. Surrounding the stalls are entertainment moments that change from night to night. In the 2025 edition, for example, the amphitheater hosted Christmas Tales by Mr. Punch, featuring storytelling and theater for the little ones.

  • Christmas market with crafts, gifts, and local gastronomic products
  • Illuminations and decorations along the paths of the Villa Comunale
  • Tales, storytelling, and entertainment for children in the amphitheater
  • Music and entertainment during the village evenings
  • Free admission to all activities

Beyond the village: Atripalda's widespread Christmas

The event is not an isolated episode: it is the most visible moment of a Christmas program that the Municipality of Atripalda spreads throughout the month of December, which in 2025 extended from December 6th to 29th, with events continuing until Epiphany. The program reaches different parts of the city and combines very different themes: fun, culture, reflection, sports, and solidarity.

  • Piazza Umberto I: the ice skating rink, open until January 6th, and musical performances, such as the St. Thomas Gospel Family
  • Cassese Library: meetings with authors, presentations, and poetry events
  • City churches: concerts and performances during the Advent and novena period
  • Valleverde-Aquino Stadium: the traditional Christmas Match on December 26th

It is this combination that gives meaning to the event's title: for a few weeks, Atripalda truly acts as a Christmas city, with multiple locations lit up simultaneously and an audience moving on foot from one square to another.

Lights, stories, and solidarity

One of the features highlighted by the local press is the solidarity and community component of the event: working alongside the municipal administration are associations, parishes, the Youth Forum, and local collectives, which enliven the calendar with fundraising initiatives, workshops, and parties aimed at young people. The result is a Christmas that feels less like a commercial operation and more like a community celebration, where the town square becomes a meeting place again in the darkest month of the year.

Atripalda, at the gates of Avellino

Atripalda is a town of about eleven thousand inhabitants in the Province of Avellino, in Campania, practically joined to the Irpinian capital and crossed by the Sabato river. Beneath its streets rests the ancient Roman Abellinum, and the center preserves important historical sites such as the Specus Martyrum. Visiting the Christmas village is therefore also an opportunity to discover a piece of Irpinia often ignored by tourist circuits, in an area known for its great DOCG wines — Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo, Taurasi — and for hearty winter cuisine, made of fresh pasta, chestnuts, nougat, and holiday sweets.

Who it is for

The natural audience for the event is families with children from the Sabato Valley, but the village also works well for those passing through Avellino in the days before the holidays looking for an authentic, small-town Christmas atmosphere, without the crowds of the large Northern markets. The free formula and the short evenings (from 6:00 PM onwards) make it easy to combine with a dinner in the center or a walk in the capital, just a few minutes away by car.

Christmas City — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Atripalda Christmas City has not yet been announced. As in previous years, the event is expected to take place during the Christmas period, as part of the December program promoted by the Municipality of Atripalda, with the festive village set up in the "Don Giuseppe Diana" Villa Comunale Amphitheater. Dates, times, and the program will be announced by the municipal administration, usually between late November and early December.

2026 Edition: information expected

As of the writing of this page, no official communication regarding the dates for the 2026 edition of Atripalda Christmas City has been published. This is completely normal: it is a Christmas event whose calendar is defined and released only close to the holidays, along with the rest of the Municipality of Atripalda's December program.

In previous editions, the village was set up in the "Don Giuseppe Diana" Villa Comunale Amphitheater, with evening openings from 6:00 PM, stalls, illuminations, and entertainment for children and families, with free admission. The rest of the Christmas program involved Piazza Umberto I, the Cassese Library, the city churches, and the Valleverde-Aquino Stadium.

To find out the final dates and program, it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Atripalda and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, which publishes the complete calendar of the city's Christmas events every year. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.

Prices Christmas City 2026
