The Assunta Festival in Pontechianale

The Assunta Festival is the most anticipated summer event in the Castello hamlet of Pontechianale, the highest municipality in the Varaita Valley, in the province of Cuneo (Piedmont). Celebrated every year on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, it transforms the small Alpine village overlooking the lake into a gathering point for residents, vacationers, and hikers passing through beneath the Monviso.

The fireworks display over the lake

The highlight of the evening is the fireworks display which, on Ferragosto night, lights up the sky and reflects on the waters of the Pontechianale reservoir. The fireworks suspended between the mountains and their shimmer on the water create a unique scenic backdrop, which has become the symbol of the festival over the years and one of the most photographed sights in the upper valley. The event is promoted by the Castello hamlet community with the support of the municipality and local associations.

Religious tradition and music

Alongside the spectacle, the festival retains its devotional soul linked to the Assunta Chapel in Castello, around which the religious celebration and the community's choral moments gather. The day is completed with music, entertainment, and social gatherings in the square, in the spirit of Piedmontese village festivals, where the sacred and the festive coexist naturally.

An Alpine village between Monviso and Occitan culture

Pontechianale rises at the top of the Varaita Valley, a land with a strong Occitan identity and high-mountain landscapes. The Castello hamlet, together with the nearby village of Chianale (one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy), is a prime starting point for hikes toward the Alevè forest, the largest stone pine forest in the Alps, and the surrounding lakes.
