The Ferragosto festival in the Castello hamlet, featuring a fireworks display over the lake in Pontechianale.
The Assunta Festival is the most anticipated summer event in the Castello hamlet of Pontechianale, the highest municipality in the Varaita Valley, in the province of Cuneo (Piedmont). Celebrated every year on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, it transforms the small Alpine village overlooking the lake into a gathering point for residents, vacationers, and hikers passing through beneath the Monviso.
The highlight of the evening is the fireworks display which, on Ferragosto night, lights up the sky and reflects on the waters of the Pontechianale reservoir. The fireworks suspended between the mountains and their shimmer on the water create a unique scenic backdrop, which has become the symbol of the festival over the years and one of the most photographed sights in the upper valley. The event is promoted by the Castello hamlet community with the support of the municipality and local associations.
Alongside the spectacle, the festival retains its devotional soul linked to the Assunta Chapel in Castello, around which the religious celebration and the community's choral moments gather. The day is completed with music, entertainment, and social gatherings in the square, in the spirit of Piedmontese village festivals, where the sacred and the festive coexist naturally.
Pontechianale rises at the top of the Varaita Valley, a land with a strong Occitan identity and high-mountain landscapes. The Castello hamlet, together with the nearby village of Chianale (one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy), is a prime starting point for hikes toward the Alevรจ forest, the largest stone pine forest in the Alps, and the surrounding lakes. Experiencing the Assunta Festival means combining the atmosphere of a traditional feast with the discovery of one of the most evocative corners of the Piedmontese mountains.
The 2026 edition of the Assunta Festival takes place on August 15th in the Castello hamlet of Pontechianale. The date is officially confirmed by the Municipality; the full program, including the times for the religious celebration, musical moments, and the fireworks display over the lake, will be announced by the organizers closer to the event. It is recommended to check for updates on the channels of the Municipality and local associations.
Pontechianale can be reached by car by driving up the Varaita Valley from Saluzzo along the SP8; the Castello hamlet is located on the shores of the lake. The reference train station is Saluzzo, from where you can continue by car or seasonal bus lines toward the upper valley.
The festival is held on August 15th. The fireworks display is scheduled for the evening, after dark, on the lake in the Castello hamlet.
Mountain-appropriate clothing is recommended even in summer: at an altitude of over 1,600 meters, evenings can be cool. Arrive early to find parking near the lake.
